From Tiny Stage Concerts World Headquarters:
One of the best-kept secrets of North Carolina sits in a corner of a living room in Northwest Charlotte and it just turned 10 years old! It started with a Tiny Stage built in the living room in Fall 2015. At some point, the idea came along to share music from this stage out to the world. In early April 2016, the decision was made to make a run at Tiny Stage Concerts to bring the original music that we heard around Charlotte, NC to the masses through a video series that we recorded from our Tiny Stage. We decided 5 songs each would be a good starting place for our once-a-week series. That would put each video at an average of 20 minutes or more - never mind that the average attention span on the internet was about 30 seconds! The next step was recruiting songwriters and sharing our vision with them. Al Lemmond was our first guinea pig – ah, I mean recruit! He bravely stepped onto the stage as we were still figuring out a game plan. We made it through our first recording session - there was no turning back now! To get 20 minutes of recording can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half – or more. That is just the start of it. Once it was recorded, everything was transferred to the computer and edited digitally. Because we wanted professional sounding recordings, the audio was recorded separately, mixed separately, and then edited back in with the video. This process usually took anywhere from 2 to 4 hours – especially in the beginning as this was a new process to learn on new software.
With our first Tiny Stage Concerts recording done and fully edited, we were ready to blast it out to the world and share with the millions of listeners eager to hear our offerings. So, we uploaded it to YouTube and set up our Tiny Stage Concerts YouTube channel. On April 15, 2016, we presented “Al Lemmond on Tiny Stage Concerts” to the world on our newly created Tiny Stage Concerts page. Back then, the internet was much like the Wild West, and you could almost hear the tumbleweeds blowing across the prairie. We managed to get a few views and that was enough to keep us going.
The first few recordings were rough – trying to convince our songwriter friends that we were doing something legit and coordinating schedules to get them recorded – all while working full-time jobs. Several recording appointments had to be rescheduled for various reasons. We eventually realized that it was easier for everyone to have fewer options and settled into a regular schedule of recording on Saturdays with a few Sundays for backup. That schedule had to be adjusted regularly as we grew and started getting more out-of-town songwriters stopping by on their way through town. The record for traveling the farthest to get to Tiny Stage is still held by Geoff Achison who traveled from Melbourne, Australia (via Asheville, NC) in Fall of 2018 to record with us.
We are often credited with making people sound good, but all we really do is capture the performance on Tiny Stage as cleanly as possible and share it with the world. The real magic happens on the stage. We tried hard to build a place where music could emanate from - but it is the artists that bring the mojo that keeps us inspired to continue featuring them. And the audience is the other part of that equation. We are thankful to the hundreds of thousands of views/listens from fans all over the world.
Ten years later - we have 320+ Tiny Stage Concerts, over ¼-Million Views on YouTube and a thriving community of songwriters (many of whom have collaborated on projects with each other). People have asked us if we are getting rich doing this – yes, yes we are! It was always a labor of love and there was not much money - be we have been enriched beyond monetary gains.
Thank you all for 10 years of support – we plan to keep it going for a while!
