🇭🇹 Haiti’s Legal System: A French Connection
Did you know Haiti’s legal system is rooted in the French Napoleonic Code? ⚖️
Haiti is a Caribbean country occupying the western third of the island of Hispaniola. Haiti gained independence from France in 1804, making it the second country in the Americas, after the United States, to free itself from colonial rule.
Haiti’s judiciary consists of four levels:
• Court of Cassation
• Courts of Appeal
• Civil Courts
• Magistrates’ Courts
But how does Haiti’s civil law tradition differ from the U.S. common-law system? 🌎

🇵🇪 From Chicago to Peru—and back again.

Before becoming Pope Leo XIV, Robert Prevost spent much of his career between his hometown of Chicago and Peru. He first arrived in Peru as an Augustinian missionary in 1985, later spending nearly a decade in Trujillo, where he taught canon law, served as a parish priest, and worked at an Augustinian seminary.

He returned to Chicago in 1999.

Peru became a defining chapter of his life—and a country he would eventually call home. 🌎🇵🇪

🌍 Greenland vs. Iceland: same neighborhood, very different worlds!

Greenland is about three times larger than Iceland and is dominated by a massive ice sheet covering more than 700,000 square miles. Its Arctic climate brings much colder conditions. 🧊

Iceland has a milder maritime subarctic climate, thanks in part to the Gulf Stream, and is shaped by volcanic activity along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. 🌋

And here’s the surprising twist: Arctic mosquitoes (Aedes nigripes) reach peak abundance in Greenland during June and July. 🦟

🌎 Does Canada share a border with Europe? 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰

The geography: Greenland is geographically part of North America, but it is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a European country.

Canada and Greenland are separated by the Nares Strait, so Canada does not share a land border with Denmark or Europe. But political geography and physical geography don’t always line up!

Geography is full of surprises. 🌍

🌍 Did you know Antarctica has been a demilitarized zone since 1959?

On December 1, 1959, 12 nations signed the Antarctic Treaty, preserving the continent for peaceful purposes and scientific research. The treaty prohibits military bases, military maneuvers, weapons testing—including nuclear weapons—and radioactive waste disposal.

It also promotes freedom of scientific investigation and international cooperation. Importantly, the treaty neither recognizes nor rejects existing territorial claims.

❄️ But could that ever change one day? What do you think?
