Everyone remembers THAT Halloween house from childhood – the one with an inordinate amount of lighting, fog, tombstones, ghosts, ground-breaking skeletons and corpses. Today, home haunting is even more extreme, with ever more truly original, spooky experiences – for free! Nation-wide, home haunters meet at conventions and via on-line forums to share tips on building props, designing pneumatics on the cheap, and optimizing small spaces. Variously called “yard haunts” or “art haunts,” the home haunters’ displays are eagerly awaited by local communities each year. And we have one in the Elizabeth neighborhood of Charlotte, NC! “Rosemont Manor” at the 2100 block of East 5th Street annually draws over 1000 visitors. The haunt is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so donations are tax deductible. The two homeowners spend the better part of two months building the one-night-only event. Each year, new attractions are added – in 2014, a 9-foot evil clown arch complete with rotating spiral eyes greeted trick-or-treaters. In 2015, a 28-foot frame is being raised – its purpose, they say, a secret until Halloween night. In addition, their haunt features animatronics, live performers (fire-eaters!), and a realistic thunder-and-lightening show. All this “just” in their yard and porch – small enough to be palatable for the easily scared, just the right size for a few thrills. The yard display is appropriate for all ages; tents and vignettes are at parents’ discretion. Rosemont Manor is always free, but the Greater Charlotte SPCA will be on site collecting donations for their rescue efforts.
