The Spirit of My Heart
By Iris Mae
There is a room inside me
that no one has ever fully entered.
Not because the door was locked,
but because most people
mistake the doorway
for the destination.
They admire the smile.
They compliment the strength.
They thank me for the love I give.
Then they leave
before they discover
where that love was born.
The spirit of my heart
does not ask
to be rescued.
It asks
to be recognized.
To be looked at
without someone searching
for what needs fixing.
To be held
without becoming a project.
To be loved
without earning it first.
How strange...
That we spend our lives
aching to be chosen,
while quietly believing
we are too much
to keep.
Some hearts become stone.
Some become mirrors,
reflecting only
what others want to see.
Mine became a window.
You can see straight through it.
Every hope.
Every fracture.
Every unanswered prayer.
Every sunrise
that convinced me
to try loving again.
If you have ever loved someone
who could not receive your love,
then you know this place.
If you have ever stood beside someone
who heard your words
but never your heart,
then we have met
without knowing each other's names.
Love is not measured
by how loudly it speaks.
Love is measured
by what remains
after disappointment
has every reason
to make it disappear.
Mine remained.
Not because I am stronger.
But because somewhere between
every goodbye,
every misunderstanding,
every wound I never deserved,
God kept breathing life
into a heart
I was certain
had nothing left to give.
Perhaps that is the spirit
within my heart.
Not perfection.
Not endless strength.
Only this—
A quiet place
where love still lives,
waiting for someone
who understands
that the greatest miracle
is not finding a heart
that never breaks...
It is finding one
that still believes
love is worth giving.
