The Spirit of My Heart

By Iris Mae

There is a room inside me
that no one has ever fully entered.

Not because the door was locked,
but because most people
mistake the doorway
for the destination.

They admire the smile.
They compliment the strength.
They thank me for the love I give.

Then they leave
before they discover
where that love was born.

The spirit of my heart
does not ask
to be rescued.

It asks
to be recognized.

To be looked at
without someone searching
for what needs fixing.

To be held
without becoming a project.

To be loved
without earning it first.

How strange...

That we spend our lives
aching to be chosen,
while quietly believing
we are too much
to keep.

Some hearts become stone.

Some become mirrors,
reflecting only
what others want to see.

Mine became a window.

You can see straight through it.

Every hope.

Every fracture.

Every unanswered prayer.

Every sunrise
that convinced me
to try loving again.

If you have ever loved someone
who could not receive your love,
then you know this place.

If you have ever stood beside someone
who heard your words
but never your heart,
then we have met
without knowing each other's names.

Love is not measured
by how loudly it speaks.

Love is measured
by what remains
after disappointment
has every reason
to make it disappear.

Mine remained.

Not because I am stronger.

But because somewhere between
every goodbye,
every misunderstanding,
every wound I never deserved,

God kept breathing life
into a heart
I was certain
had nothing left to give.

Perhaps that is the spirit
within my heart.

Not perfection.

Not endless strength.

Only this—

A quiet place
where love still lives,

waiting for someone
who understands
that the greatest miracle
is not finding a heart
that never breaks...

It is finding one
that still believes
love is worth giving.

You Say I'm Yelling

You say I'm yelling,
but you never ask what my silence sounded like.

You call me angry,
yet never count the nights
I swallowed my words
just to keep the peace.

You call me psycho,
as if a heart that breaks too often
must somehow be broken.

You speak to me
like I am a child
who has never weathered a storm,
forgetting I have carried mountains
on shoulders that never asked for applause.

You mistake my strength for defiance,
my voice for disrespect,
my passion for madness.

But I am not loud.

I am simply tired
of whispering my worth
to someone who refuses to hear it.

One day,
someone will not fear my fire.
They will sit beside it,
warm their hands,
and call it home.

Until then,
I will not apologize
for the sound of a heart
that refuses to disappear.

When My Heart Is Broken

My heart is broken into pieces, but broken things are not always ruined. Sometimes they become mosaics—held together by grace instead of perfection.

I have loved deeply. I have cried honestly. I have carried more than many will ever know.

If I have lost myself, then this season is not punishment; it is an invitation to come home.

Home to the little girl who danced without fear. Home to the woman who climbs mountains to find peace. Home to the mother whose love knows no limits. Home to the daughter of God, who was never forgotten.

I will no longer measure my worth by someone's inability to see it.

I will choose peace over uncertainty. I will choose truth over fear. I will choose myself—not because I have stopped loving others, but because God has never stopped loving me.

And one day, whether beside someone or standing on my own, I will realize I was never empty.
I was simply pouring from a cup that had not been refilled.

So today, I return to the Well that never runs dry.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18

I choose peace over uncertainty.

When people don't see me, God sees me—and that is enough.

When people don't hear me, God hears me—and that is enough.

When people don't understand me, God understands me—and that is enough.

When people don't feel my heart, God knows my heart—and that is enough.

I choose peace over uncertainty, because God is enough.

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You." — Isaiah 26:3

1 Samuel 16:7
"...The Lord does not see as man sees... the Lord looks at the heart."
