We closed 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' on November 16th. It was truly a magical experience for the actors and the audience. Six out of eight performances had standing ovations. I asked many children, as they made poppies or cornstalks in our craft area preshow, 'are you going to participate in the show?' and they'd shake their wee heads but my goodness they changed their minds and raised their hands whenever the actors asked for volunteers. Watching the audience participate onstage and in their seats was just as much fun as watching the play. I particularly loved the 'Silly Dance' choreographed by 13 year old Bridgette. Eight children participated and the audience stood up and danced with Madame Oz'Baryshnikov as she told them to make a silly face..make a silly pose and do the silly dance.
One child when asked to help feed the chickens joined the other children, only he started acting like a chicken (bent over with arms flapping like wings and started pecking at the ground) The audience laughed hysterically. Another time a child started to cry when she wasn't picked and the actor, without hesitating, said 'How would you like a different job' and the child dashed up to the stage to hold the 'Ring this Bell' sign. The audience said 'awwwwwww'. There were many stories of audience participation, giggles, laughs, swoons and applause after scenes. I've always believed that 'theatre can change lives'. And it can and does. I remember children who can to see ACT RI's audience participation plays, joined our acting classes and then our company. Those shy, stumbling, stuttering children grew up to be lawyers, professors, journalists, directors, Broadway stage managers and more. I know their experience in theatre made a difference in the people they grew up to be. Youth theatre also develops future audiences and supporters of the ARTS. Connie Fisher wrote a lovely article about the production for News of Davidson. Thanks Connie and thank YOU to the Lake Norman Community and parents who supported our production and to our incredible production crew Wendi, Tess, Hudson, Helen, Genevieve, Emma, Bridget and especially Marla Brown and the Warehouse Studio Theatre. Till the next time.
Happy Holidays!!!
