Officially submitting my application for ‘Favorite Aunt of the Year.’ 🙋‍♀️✨

Meet Tom! He is a darling Irish Cob who I’ve had the absolute pleasure of riding and playing with lately. His lovely mama is currently riding her way through England, which means Tom and I have been left to our own devices—and we are having a blast. He's a baby like Bruce, so comes with all the joys of a greenie, but unlike Bruce, my feet don't hurt when I dismount!

Don't worry, , I promise I'll hand the reins back over when you return... in the meantime, we're going to enjoy that last ride today! 🍏

No white breeches, no show schedule, and absolutely performance anxiety to be seen this weekend. ❌

While half my feed is packing up the trailer for a horse show, this weekend is actually a massive one for me—just in a completely different way. I’m sitting this one out, which means I get something incredibly rare: uninterrupted, quality time with both my boys.

No rushing between rings or stressing over class times. Instead, we’re focusing on the good stuff. I'm thinking [well overdue] grooming sessions, finally pulling out my camera to capture them looking handsome, and celebrating the kind of "small wins" you can only find when the pressure is entirely off.

To those of you competing this weekend- good luck and have fun!! I'm cheering for you, just from the barn aisle and not the ringside.

📝 I’m going to be honest about something most horse owners don’t talk about..

The greatest challenge in having two injured horses isn’t what you think. Sure, the financial toll is massive, the worries constant, and the helicopter parenting exhausting.

But the hardest part? The mental approach. The truth is that the picture in my head of what today might look like was vastly different than the reality- a year ago, 6 months ago, heck even 3 weeks ago it was different. The most constant thing about the last year as a horse owner (x2) has been change, and so the main lesson has been this:

Let go. Shake that mental etch-a-sketch, let it develop itself. Try to focus on the glimmers that each day offers- quiet moments hand grazing, the silliness of a buck on a lunge line, and try to forget all the goals and visions of western dress up or cross country runs that I had in my head.

Of course this doesn’t just apply to horses- and it’s been a exercise that I’ve been having to practice often over the last year regarding so many things- relationships, finances, career, my own health- all have shifted in ways that have required major realignment mentally and more.

So I think about a quote I came across yesterday that said, the bird perched on a branch doesn’t trust the branch, it trusts its wings.

So I’m going to try, *try*, as hard as I’m finding it, to let go of my branch, of my expectations, and maybe even some goals. And hope my wings will carry me wherever it is I need to be. 💗

Is anyone else still reeling from Badminton history being made over the weekend? Ros, Walter, and being the only combination to ever win the event 3 times?! I’m still stunned. And then to be less than 4 months postpartum to boot?! Badass.

Wow wow wow.
The outpouring of care and support that came from my reel this week- so many well wishes but also just people texting to say they care… you guys don’t know how much that means to me.

I really wasn’t sure about sharing in the first place, but you guys have made me realize what a wonderful community the horse world can be, and I’m grateful for the reminder. While still pursuing opinions and treatments for Bruce, and doing my best to give Foster a chance at recovery, every comment, message and text has been another reason to keep pursuing all my options.

I’ll do my best to provide updates as they come, but for now enjoy 2022’s version of Foster! Today’s version is significantly gimpier, more hairy, and with much less top line 🫠

If you want to win the marathon, the universe hands you running shoes, not the trophy.
-Freek van Litsenburg

Thinking about this quote a lot lately, as I keep working hard to fulfill various goals I’ve set my mind to!

It’s a good reminder that the wins come as a result of many, many small steps all heading in [approximately] the same direction, and that success is not the result of luck, but hard work and commitment.

There’s a bit of Monday motivation for you, so lace up those sneeks and step into your week with a fresh perspective!
