Most of you that have met Murphy know that he is a Grade A, Certifiable Good Boy when it comes to being a barn dog. What makes him even more special to me is his discernment when it comes to the horses.
Foster, though to be treated with respect and awareness, is "safe".. (take this with a grain of salt as we all do when it comes to horses, I hope!). Murphy can approach Foster, run alongside Foster while I ride, basically, there are very few limits on where Murphy can go when Foster is involved.
And then, Bruce enters the scene... Foster has been a known entity to me for 15+ years.. Bruce- not so much. And 1400+ lbs of unknown baby horse means that I make sure my 13 lb pup stays away... and boy does he know it. Murphy loves coming to the barn when I ride Bruce. He watches my rides as usual, at a polite distance outside the arena, and when they are over, he waits to be invited to say hello. He follows at a safe distance behind Bruce, or goes ahead of us into narrow hallways.
Murphy is one of the smartest dogs I have owned, and it's his ability to understand not just horses but the difference between horses (because trust me, unknown horses at the same barn don't always get the same respect) that make me appreciate just how intelligent this little creature is.
Still- best barn dog ever? I mean... I think so
