Red Calaca Studio

Red Calaca Studio The Red Calaca "Ka-la-ka" Studio features original works by Mexican artist Rosalia Torres-Weiner. Community engagement fuels my creative process.

From public murals, to the Papalote Project workshops, to The Magic Kite, I have done some of my best work when working with my community. When the food truck scene started to grow in popularity in Charlotte, I had an idea! What if I had an “Art Truck” that I could use to bring my art into the streets and neighborhoods of the city, taking art directly to the people. Last month, I took a big step i

n making this dream a reality by purchasing a 24’ step van. The truck was a great find – it was built as a demonstration vehicle by the company I purchased it from, and it has great “bones” for my project. It is already outfitted with lights, speakers, a 46” LCD TV Monitor, and an
8’x10’ awning.

🎨 My mural didn’t just hang on a wall. It made another artist.
In 2018, a young woman walked into an exhibition about the Latinx community in the DMV. She stood in front of my mural at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum. 🥹
That summer, she started painting. She started apprenticing local muralists. Today she goes by — plant art — and she’s a muralist building her own legacy. 🌱
She wrote to me this week:
“It inspired my work. Thank you for sharing your magic with all of us.”
Mi gente — I had NO idea this mural would do this.
A famous muralist once told me I wouldn’t make it. 😏
But I made it AND I helped make HER too.
So this is for every artist doubting if your work matters:
Someone is watching. Someone is being shaped. Someone is about to start their own journey because of you. 💛
Keep planting your art. Siembra arte. 🌱🎨
Don’t stop dreaming. 🇲🇽🪁

They don’t just commission a painting.
They commission me to tell their story. 🪶

This is what it looks like when a community trusts you with their words, their values, their spirit — and asks you to make it visible.

Creating scholars. Nurturing spirituality. Embracing diversity.

These aren’t just phrases painted on a canvas. They are the heartbeat of a congregation that opened their doors and said — “Rosalia, show the world who we are.”

Grateful beyond words for this collaborative commission with the community of Trinity Episcopal Church 🙏🏽✨

Wings don’t just carry you. Sometimes, they carry a whole community.

🪁 I came back from Nogales llena de energía!
Brandon and I just spent 3 days at the Nogales International Film Festival watching incredible films, meeting brilliant artists, and screening The Magic Kite on el muro. 🎬
Here’s what I learned and what I want every filmmaker and storyteller to hear:
✨ Watch other filmmakers’ work.
✨ Go to festivals. See indie films.
✨ Study how others tell powerful stories in less than 10 minutes - it challenges your creative brain. 🧠
You cannot grow in a bubble. 🙏🏽
Brandon and I are already dreaming up our next project together. That’s what good art does 🤓 it makes you want to make more.
Don’t stop dreaming, mi gente. 🇲🇽🪁

Nogales, you stole my heart again 🌵🎬✨ Being part of this festival has been an incredible experience 🤩 but what moved me most were the connections. Sitting with fellow filmmakers and storytellers who believe in the power of story just as deeply as I do? That is everything. Gracias for welcoming The Magic Kite home. Con mucho amor and 🪁❤️

I was once a young woman crossing a desert with nothing but a dream and faith in my heart. 🌵
No English. No map. Just hope.
And THIS WEEK I am going back to the same border.
Not to cross it.
But to screen my film The Magic Kite on el muro. 🪁
A story of our Latinx community in Charlotte.
Glowing on the very wall that so many of us know too well.

Monday motivation 😅💛
Broke a tooth last week. Saw my dentist this morning. And let’s just say… some other things have been breaking lately too. 🦷💔
But here’s what I know after all these years as an artist and ARTivist: 💩 happens. And we still get up. We still show up. We still pick up the brush.
So today I walked into my studio and I thanked the things that never let me down 🥰 my brushes, my paint, and the painting that’s been patiently waiting for me to come back. 🙏🏾🖌️🎨
Ay, hay que seguirle adelante!
(Gotta keep going.)
To anyone having a rough Monday - this one’s for you. We rise. 💛✨

My heart aches. 💔
But it is also full 😭☺️ because of you.
In 2012, we painted this mural together. Not for money. Not for fame. For our community. For the children left behind by deportation.

I am a Mexican-American ARTivist. I have spent my life making art that says: you matter, you belong, your story deserves to be on walls. To have that work erased — without my knowledge, without my consent — is not just a personal loss. It is a loss for every person whose spirit lived in that image.

For everyone who needed to see themselves on a wall on Central Avenue and know: you belong here.
The Consul of Mexico came to its dedication. Our people showed up. And for 13 years, it stood as a testament to who we are.
Thank you to for documenting this piece and its meaning. And thank you to everyone who has reached out with love, outrage, and support. I see you. I feel you. I am not alone in this.
Nuestra historia no se borra. 🖤

Did you know that right now, young mothers in the US are wearing ankle monitors so they won’t be deported and separated from their children?
This is Gen Z Guadalupe 😇 sacred, modern, and monitored.
She gets to stay. But not free. 🦋…in progress
