On this date in 1910, Cleveland’s Cy Young became the first—and still the only—pitcher to post 500 wins. The 43-year-old right-hander was in fine form that day in the second game of a doubleheader against the Washington Senators. He allowed a first-inning run to the Senators, who managed just a single hit off him through eight innings. When Cleveland scored twice in the top of the ninth to take a 2-1 lead, Young was three outs from No. 500.

The Senators tallied two hits and the tying run off Young in the bottom of the ninth, but the future Hall of Famer, who retired a year later with a major-league-record 749 complete games, finished what he started and came away with a 5-2 victory after Cleveland scored three times in the top of the 11th.

Young retired with 511 wins, one of several pitching records he holds. He’s also first in losses (315), games started (815) and batters faced (29,565). Young earned a place in Cooperstown in 1937, the year after the inaugural class of Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner was honored. Both classes were celebrated in the first Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 1939.
