I was finally able to take a few photos of my newest fishy friend:
Thalassophryne amazonica
Also known as, freshwater toadfish or prehistoric monster fish. There are several varieties, most of which require brackish or full salt water to survive. The Thalassophryne amazonica is the only species, that I know of, that is true freshwater.
They spend most of their time burried beneath the sand with only their beedy little eyes sticking out...just watching. They are an obligate piscivore meaning they must eat live fish to survive. I have been feeding mine rice fish, Juvenile jewel cichlids, and Juvenile Kribensis. It seems that bottom dwelling fish are the best kind of fish to feed this fellow as mid and top dwelling fish may be too far out of reach for the toadfish to ambush.
These fish can reach a size of 4-6 inches in length but due to their extreme inactivity, they can be kept in a tank as small as a 20 gallon.
Oh, and I almost forgot...they're venomous!
