Spectacular new pastel drawings by Charles Basham have arrived in the gallery!

Known for pushing light, saturation, and temperature to depict the dramatic farmlands of the Midwest and the marshes and beaches of South Carolinaโ€™s Lowcountry, Bashamโ€™s pastel drawings are imbued with an emotional enchantment of the American landscape.

Happy birthday to Christopher Clamp!

A native of Leesville, South Carolina, Clamp's deeply personal images are influenced by simple yet poignant childhood memories. The commonplace toys and objects featured in his paintings are artifacts gathered in the process of recollecting childhood experiences, particularly the hours spent with his beloved grandfather, amidst his grandfather's collected "treasures" and tools. The objects are meaningful to the artist and to his ex*****on of both content and the carefully executed textures within the paintings.

The pleasure of a thoughtfully curated group exhibition is discovering the conversations that unfold across generations, styles, and sensibilities.

Here, the rhythmic energy of Romare Beardenโ€™s ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญโ€“๐˜š๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ด ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜๐˜ฏ meets the quiet intimacy of Raul Diazโ€™s ๐˜“๐˜ข ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ชรณ๐˜ฏ, while Thomas McNickleโ€™s luminous ๐˜‰๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ ๐˜›๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ offers a moment of reflection and renewal.

Together, these works move between music and silence, memory and observation, celebration and contemplation. Each artist speaks in a distinct visual language, yet all share a deep sensitivity to place, atmosphere and their lived experiences.

The evening brought together remarkable voices, including my friend CCH Pounderโ€”an acclaimed actress, but also a thoughtful and significant collector and patron of contemporary art today.

As a featured panelist, CCH shared insights drawn from decades of championing artists of the African diaspora and building a collection that has become influential in its own right.

I was equally delighted to welcome CCH to the gallery, where we spent time looking at works by Romare Beardenโ€”an artist who holds a particularly meaningful place in my gallery.

Romare, known to me as โ€œRomieโ€, was the very first artist I represented when I opened my gallery more than 40 years ago, and his work continues to inspire me today and I often reflect that he was like a grand father to me. Sharing those stories and moments was a reminder of how art creates lasting friendships and meaningful connections across time.

Visit us again soon CCH!

Ida Kohlmeyer (1912-1997) was a matriarch among American artists, achieving international acclaim without leaving her native New Orleans. Although she did not begin painting full time until she was in her mid-thirties, Kohlmeyerโ€™s work has been represented in well over 100 solo exhibitions, including a major retrospective at the Mint Museum of Art. Her work is in the permanent collections of over 80 institutions including the High Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Ida Kohlmeyerโ€™s joyful abstract paintings and sculptures reflect the spirit of New Orleans and her long fascination with folk and primitive art. Based on her own developed alphabet of various organic and geometric shapes, the works transpose Kohlmeyerโ€™s passions and delights into compact, colorful and celebratory images.

I have always believed, collecting and living with art begins with imagining its possibilities.

Recently, we have started using visualization tools to place works from Katherine Boxallโ€™s ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’ ๐‘ฎ๐’‚๐’“๐’…๐’†๐’ exhibition into exceptional interiors, allowing collectors to experience how these paintings activate a space before they leave the gallery.

I find it to be a remarkable way to imagine scale, color, and atmosphere, demonstrating how Katherineโ€™s luminous compositions can transform a room.

Which is your favorite?
