Sometimes I just shut down when something is getting tons of hype. Whether it be books, movies or even board games. I try not to be so stubborn, but i’ll avoid it as long as I can until the hype dies down a little.

This was the case for Wyrmspan. Upon its announcement it had the board game world in a frenzy. And once people started receiving their copies everyone wanted to table the latest hotness. I went out of my way to avoid playing it several times and opted just to watch a little of a game.

Eventually I could avoid it no longer and it showed up on the table of our weekly game night- borrowed from the library of a local store. Since i’d done such a good job of avoiding it thus far, i actually didn’t know anything about the gameplay and how much it differed from it’s close cousin Wingspan. As far as I was concerned it was just a reskin with dragons.

Thankfully, I was wrong.

If you’ve played Wingspan, the bones of this game will be familiar. But mechanics have been changed just enough to resolve some gameplay issues that I have with Wingspan.

In order to entice a dragon you’ve first got to excavate a cave for it. I like this because the cave cards all give you some sort of one time benefit. It could be resources, coins or even abilities.

Doing an action more than once in a round costs more each time which makes the order in which you perform your actions much more important.

Resources are still hard to come by- but since you don’t have to roll and reroll dice it feels like the turns move on at a good clip.

The egg laying strategy is out. Eggs are much more valuable as resources in this game- used to pay for much more. And they can only be laid when another action or card tells you to.

Tucking cards is still a strong strategy, though in my first play it was mostly random cards that I drew and found out after whether they were “tuckable”.

I didn’t have to finish the game to decide that I really liked it and that the hype was well warranted. I will need to play it more to streamline my strategies, but the good news is i’m very much looking forward to my next play.

Got in a couple plays of Cosmoctopus from Henry Audubon and Paper Fort Games & Lucky Duck Games

I really enjoyed the mashup of mechanics in this game that lends itself to lots of replayablity- a little hand/resource management, a little grid movement, variable setups and just a little hint of engine building.

We found that our strategies differed vastly from game to game- completely reliant on the cards we drew. And making the decision to be flexible and switch up what you wanted to do was key to getting those valuable tentacles!

The cards are very fun- we noticed that none of the names or art were repeated on any of the cards and that all the card costs and abilities differed slightly too so it never felt repetitive- which is amazing in a game with few components.

The theme was a huge pull in me buying the game- I’m always a big fan of Henry’s designs and love this off the wall story and lore that it’s built around.

I enjoyed it so much I’ll be bringing it to a little convention soon so I can share it with more people!
