Big Shoes To Fill

This little watercolor was inspired by a favorite photo of my granddaughter wearing a pair of very big shoes. I painted it on a small scrap of watercolor paper as part of my personal challenge to paint smaller, more often, and more freely. A philosophy I call "Don't Scrap Your Scraps." I'm learning that smaller paintings feel less intimidating and encourage me to experiment, loosen up, and simply enjoy the process. Every sketch and every brushstroke teaches me something. and having someone I love as my subject made this one especially joyful to paint.

Reflection of Divine Serenity

Reflections of Divine Serenity is a piece that invites you into a moment where nature's quiet presence feels deeply restorative and spiritually alive. At 16 by 20 inches, this painting uses a blend of acrylic and oil on a crisp white canvas to bring a tranquil landscape into focus, a calm river gently weaving through a dense forest, flanked by two sturdy trees standing guard on either bank. Beyond them, snow-capped mountains rise with quiet majesty under a vibrant blue sky, their peaks mirrored subtly in the smooth river below.

What I aimed to capture here goes beyond a simple natural scene. This is a reflection, both literal and metaphorical, of the peace and stillness I find in the presence of our Heavenly Father. The flowing river carries a sense of gentle movement, while the steadfast trees and distant mountains offer a grounding strength. Together, these elements form a harmonious balance between motion and stability, inviting the viewer to pause and breathe in the calm that surrounds us even amidst life's complexity.

The process of creating this work was deeply intentional. I focused on rendering the serenity of a snowy mountain landscape paired with the quiet ripple of a tranquil lake. This wasn't just about capturing a moment in nature but inviting a spiritual presence into the scene, a reminder that peace can be found in the simplest, most unassuming places when we open ourselves to it. The reflections on the water act like a window, softly blending sky and earth, physical and divine.

Reflections of Divine Serenity is an invitation to step into a space where quiet strength and gentle beauty meet. It's a visual prayer, a call to recognize the sacred in stillness and to embrace the natural world as a source of renewal and hope. Through this work, I hope to share an experience of calm that lingers, encouraging you to look beyond the surface and find the deeper peace that comes from faith and quiet reflection.

Inspired by Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, this painting reimagines an art historical icon as a celebration of Black beauty and identity. Flowing locs replace the traditional head covering, a handcrafted cowrie shell and pearl earring honors African heritage, and subtle gold leaf reflects both value and divinity. My hope is that viewers recognize that masterpieces are not confined to history; they continue to evolve as new voices and cultures see themselves reflected within them.
