UN experts fear Israel could spread Gaza devastation to Lebanon, Iran, wider region

As we’ve been reporting, a dozen UN human rights experts have denounced US, Israeli aggression against Iran and Lebanon, fearing the devastation seen in Gaza could now spread to other countries in the region.

“We are alarmed at the prospect that the kind of large-scale destruction and violence seen in Gaza could be extended to Iran, Lebanon and other countries in the region,” the experts said in their statement.

They expressed particular concern about Lebanon, where at least 700,000 people have now been forcibly displaced by Israel under “indiscriminate bombardment”, in what the experts said “would constitute yet another war crime” by Israeli forces.

“The orders issued to the inhabitants of South Lebanon and southern Beirut to leave their homes are blatantly illegal,” the experts said.

In Iran, the experts called for independent investigations into an attack on a school that killed at least 180 girls, strikes on Iran’s oil refineries that caused acid rain, and attacks on a desalination plant.

A major cyberattack has disrupted the global networks of medical device manufacturer Stryker, one of the world’s largest healthcare technology companies.

A hacking group known as Handala, believed to have links to Iran, claimed responsibility and said the attack was carried out in retaliation for a deadly strike on a school in southern Iran.

The group says it has obtained around 50 terabytes of company data and described the breach as the start of a “new chapter in cyber warfare”.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it launched four missiles targeting the headquarters of US forces in the Middle East, including Camp Arifjan in Kuwait.

Iranian media reported that at least two of the missiles were aimed directly at the major US military installation south of Kuwait City.

There has been no immediate confirmation from US or Kuwaiti authorities about the reported strike or possible damage.
