PLUG IN AS WE CONTINUE TO UNPACK EACH ONE

LEVEL 3: KEEP THE VIBE GOING

The storytelling continues.
On this Flashback Friday, we are bringing you stories from JBAAP ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

Level 3 - We took the vibe up a notch.
Representing the first republic of Africa, Liberia.
Songa Yates led us in singing the Liberian National Anthem.
Next came the Fashion Flash Mob led by Anzonia Watson, "Zo the Model", who WORKED the runway and invited others to join her! It was a fashion walk mashup that kept the vibe of the party thumping!

Francis Sio, the second Emcee for the party, took the mic to ask us, "If Johnette Karpeh was here, what would she be doing? She would be dancing! Let's dance!"

It was beautiful to see African culture on full display through fashion, dancing, and good ol' African music. What a legacy of Community, Culture, and Connecting. See the recap of these special moments from Level 3 💛

The Legacy Is Still Vibing BIG TIME! ✨✨✨

LEVEL 2: "When We Were We"

Nostalgia vibes as the party officially kicked off with John Karpeh taking the mic. He addressed the heaviness of the day, while laying out Johnette's legacy. Sharing the story of how young Johnette would sneak and play around with his DJ set while he was at work. Startled at his set being on the loudest volume when he turned it on, he couldn't figure out why it wasn't the way he left it. Finally, the mystery was solved when he caught the young Social Light in the act. After giving her fingers a firm pop, she learned not to mess with his set.

He then asked the DJ to play "Casser La Baraque" by Petit Makambo from the Impact album. One of Johnette's favorite African songs as a child that she often requested for him to play. Calling it the "Duh-Duh-Duh-Duh" song.

It was a multi-generation situation on the dance floor as the "Original Party Starters" took over the party. Who are the Original Party Starters? All of the aunties and uncles who are proof that there is no age limit to having a good time. We all party together. "When We Were We Were Where You?" Celebrating 45 years of Community, Culture, Connecting.

LEVEL 1: "THE WARM UP"

"The Warm Up", where people slowly started trickling in. Emotions were heavy as we celebrated someone who wasn't physically there. Nevertheless, Johnette's presence was felt in every corner of the room. As family and close friends arrived, a representation of all the generations made for the perfect mix. It felt like community.

We greeted each other, settled in and awaited for the good times to unfold. Sianai Tyes and Jamal Alphonso Stewart welcomed us and set the stage for what was sure to be an unforgettable party, celebrating 45 years of Community, Culture, and Connecting.

Yes Afrobeats is a part of African culture, but it goes so much deeper than that. I want to throw a Big A*z African Party to show how we really do it! Perhaps for my birthday. Let’s take it back to Marquee.”
