DJ Mikey Creating The BEST Wedding EVER!! You wedding day is the most important day of your life. Don't trus
(1)

My goal is to get everyone on the dance floor and keep them there all night long. I work very hard to make sure everyone in attendance feels they were important when it comes to the music selection. I have had people tell me time and again that their guests said their legs and feet hurt the following day because they had not danced so much in such a long time

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR WEDDING MUSIC IS ANYTHING BUT TRADITIONAL?

Let me tell you about a wedding I DJ’d this past weekend. Because it reminded me of something I’ve believed for a very long time.

Your wedding music should reflect YOU. Not what someone else thinks wedding music is supposed to be.

This particular couple described themselves and their friends as “ski bums.” Their musical tastes? Jam bands, bluegrass, and a whole lot of artists you probably won’t find on your typical wedding DJ’s Top 200 playlist. I do t believe I played a single “normal” wedding dance song.

We’re talking Billy Strings, The Infamous Stringdusters, Kitchen Dwellers, Leftover Salmon, Grateful Dead, and more!

Now, I’ll be the first to admit something.

This was WAY outside my musical comfort zone!

I’ve spent years being a DJ for wedding guests, but this was a completely different musical world for me.

And you know what?

I LOVED THE CHALLENGE!

I spent hours and hours listening to unfamiliar artists, discovering songs, studying the energy of the music, and figuring out how to make it all flow together.

Because here’s the thing…

When a couple trusts me with one of the biggest celebrations of their lives, I don’t believe it’s my job to tell them what their wedding SHOULD sound like.

It’s my job to understand what they want their wedding to FEEL like.

And believe me, I wanted to get this one right!

When it came time to open the dance floor, I decided to kick things off with a wild, high-energy bluegrass song.

What happened next?

EVERYBODY rushed onto the dance floor!

They formed a giant circle, clapping, stomping, spinning, and dancing like they were at the world’s greatest mountain hoedown!

And they kept going.

For THREE AND A HALF HOURS!

Throughout the night, the groom kept telling me, “This is perfect!” There is no greater compliment I can ever receive.

What an incredible night!

But here’s what I really want future brides and grooms to take away from this story.

You don’t have to have a traditional wedding playlist to have an AMAZING wedding reception.

Maybe your musical tastes lean toward country, alternative rock, indie, EDM, Motown, classic rock, bluegrass, jam bands, or something completely different.

Maybe you and your friends have a playlist that makes absolutely no sense to anyone outside your circle.

THAT’S OKAY!

In fact, that’s what makes your celebration uniquely yours.

The best wedding receptions aren’t necessarily the ones where everybody knows every song.

They’re the ones where the music connects with the people in the room.

And sometimes that means throwing the traditional wedding playbook right out the window!

After all these years, I’m still discovering new music, learning new genres, and challenging myself to create something special for every couple I work with.

I don’t pretend to know every song ever recorded. Nobody does.

But I WILL take the time to listen, learn, prepare, and understand the music that matters to you.

Because your wedding shouldn’t sound like the last 20 weddings I’ve DJ’d. It should sound like YOUR wedding.

So, to all the couples planning their big day…

Don’t be afraid to be different.

Don’t be afraid to share your unusual playlists.

And PLEASE don’t feel like you have to fill your reception with songs you don’t particularly enjoy just because they’re considered “wedding classics.”

Your personalities. Your people. Your music. Your celebration.

That’s what makes a wedding unforgettable.

And to the amazing group of ski bums who reminded me just how much fun stepping outside the musical box can be…

THANK YOU!

See you on the dance floor!

Several years ago, my nephew Jacob trusted me with one of the biggest days of his life…his wedding day.

What I didn’t realize at the time was where that one wedding would lead.

Since then, I’ve had the privilege of DJing weddings for so many people in Jacob’s circle of friends. One wedding led to another, then another, and suddenly I started seeing a lot of familiar faces on dance floors all over again.

Jacob, thank you.

Thank you for trusting me with your wedding and for helping open the door to so many friendships, memories, and incredible celebrations over the years.

And it’s not just Jacob’s circle.

One of the greatest compliments I’ve received throughout my career is when a family brings me back again and again. I’ll DJ one sibling’s wedding, then another. A cousin gets married. Then another family member calls. Sometimes years later, I walk into a wedding and see an entire family I already know.

That means the world to me.

There are a lot of DJs a couple could choose. When someone says, “We want you because you did their wedding,” I never take that for granted.

Every couple who hires me is trusting me with a day they only get once.

That’s why, after all these years, I still work incredibly hard to deliver the absolute best experience I can for every single couple who puts that trust in me.

Jacob, thanks for being one of the people who started a ripple that has continued for years.

And to every couple, friend, sibling, cousin and family who has invited me back for another celebration:

Thank you for your trust. It means more to me than you probably realize.

There are weddings… and then there are absolute BANGERS.

Last night at castlefarms.weddings was one of THOSE weddings.

From the very first song until the very last song of the night, they DANCED.

And I don’t mean casually danced.

They sang.
They jumped.
They body surfed.
They completely lost their minds.

Someone even managed to blow the butt out of his tuxedo pants. 😂

These are the nights I absolutely love.

When the right group of people comes together, they’re ready to have fun, and the energy starts building, you don’t have to force a dance floor.

You just get out of its way and let it happen.

Last night was one of those reminders of why, after all these years, I still absolutely LOVE what I do.

What. A. Night. EPIC.

WHY DO CERTAIN SONGS BECOME “WEDDING CLASSICS?”

Here’s something I’ve wondered after years of DJing weddings.

Why do we keep coming back to the same song from certain artists, when those artists have so many other songs that might actually be BETTER?

Think about it:

Earth, Wind & Fire — “September”
Great song. Absolutely.

But I’ll say it… “Let’s Groove” is better.

The Killers — “Mr. Brightside”
A wedding dance-floor monster.

But what about “Somebody Told Me?”

Def Leppard — “Pour Some Sugar on Me”
It gets played at weddings constantly.

But is it really the best Def Leppard song?

Journey — “Don’t Stop Believin’”
Possibly one of the biggest wedding sing-alongs ever.

But I’m going WAY out on a limb here…
The entire Escape album is better than “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

So how does this happen?

At some point, one song becomes THE SONG.

Everyone knows it.
Everyone sings it.
Everyone expects it.

And suddenly an artist with an incredible catalog gets reduced to one song that DJs play over and over and over again.

So here’s my question:

WHAT WEDDING CLASSIC WOULD YOU REPLACE? and what song by the SAME ARTIST would you play instead?

I want to hear the controversial answers.

And yes… you’re allowed to come after me for the Journey comment. 😇

THE SECRET TO BEING A GREAT DJ? VERSATILITY

Last night at the Northwest Michigan Fair was a perfect reminder of something I’ve learned over many years as a DJ:

A great DJ doesn’t just play music. A great DJ learns how to play for EVERYONE in front of them.

Early in the evening, I had elementary-aged kids coming up asking for songs from Moana and Sing!

Then the crowd started getting older.

Suddenly the requests shifted to songs like “No Hands” and “Fe!n”. The high-school crowd wanted THEIR music, THEIR energy and THEIR moment.

And later in the evening?

The adults took over.

The requests got a little rowdier, the music changed again, and the party became something completely different from where we started.

And I loved every minute of it.

It got me thinking about how important musical versatility really is for a DJ especially at a wedding.

Think about the people sitting at a typical wedding reception.

You might have grandparents in their 70s and 80s. Parents and relatives who grew up with Motown, classic rock, disco and ’80s music. Thirty-somethings who remember when ’90s and 2000s music was NEW.

And a dance floor full of twenty-somethings who want today’s country, pop, hip-hop and dance music.

Every one of those people wants to feel like the DJ noticed them.

The trick isn’t simply knowing all those different styles of music.

It’s knowing WHEN to play them.

It’s knowing how to move from one generation to another without emptying the dance floor.

It’s watching who’s responding and realizing when it’s time to change direction.

And sometimes it’s taking two completely different generations and finding that ONE song they both love.

That’s one of my favorite parts of DJing.

A wedding shouldn’t feel like five separate playlists for five different age groups. It should feel like one party where everybody gets their moment.

Different generations. Different music. Same dance floor. And THAT is what makes DJing fun.

Anybody can make a playlist. The art is knowing what to play NEXT.

Ever hear someone say “Wow… that DJ costs an arm and a leg”?

I get it. I really do.

The other day, I had to call a plumber. Not exactly how I wanted to spend my afternoon… or my money.

When he arrived, he was upfront:
“I’m not the cheapest.”

And you know what? I believed him.

But I also knew something else…
He was going to fix the problem the right way.

Sure, I could’ve called someone cheaper.

But if it wasn’t done right?

Now I’m paying twice… and dealing with a bigger mess.

That’s the difference.

Weddings and events are no different.

You’re not just hiring someone to “play music.”

You’re trusting someone to:

• Read the room
• Keep the energy flowing all night
• Make sure timelines stay on track
• Handle unexpected moments without panic
• And create an experience people talk about long after it’s over

Anyone can press play.
Not everyone can control a room.

And just like that plumber…experience, preparation, and consistency come at a price.

That said, everyone has a budget. And that matters.

The goal isn’t to be the cheapest… it’s to be the one you trust when it matters most.

Because when it’s your wedding day,
there are no do-overs.
