Utah's Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City has announced the birth of a healthy male giraffe calf, born January 26 to first-time mother Minka and father Ja. The newborn weighed 139 pounds and stood 5 feet 8 inches tall at birth.

The delivery took place naturally in the zoo's African Savanna barn, with the animal care team monitoring closely both in person and through cameras donated by the Marriner S. Eccles Foundation and Backstreet Surveillance, Inc. In preparation, the team created a soft-landing area to cushion the calf's natural six-foot drop into the world.

Thanks to a trusting relationship with Minka, caregivers were able to assist the calf as he found his footing. Once steady, he began walking independently—a promising sign of health and strength.
