Ever wonder why the phrase shade grown pops up so often on specialty coffee bags?

Historically, coffee naturally thrives in the shade, but modern industrial farming often clears forests to grow coffee in wide open, sun baked fields for faster yields.

Shade grown coffee flips the script back to how nature intended. The canopy slows down the ripening of the coffee cherries, giving the beans significantly more time to develop complex sugars, resulting in a much smoother, deeper, and more nuanced flavor profile in your morning cup.

Beyond creating a superior taste, shade grown farming is a massive win for the environment. The overhead trees act as a natural shield that prevents soil erosion, retains moisture in the ground, and creates a thriving ecosystem for local wildlife.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 17th, 2027 to taste and learn about coffee in Charleston, WV.

Ever see that little green frog seal on a coffee bag and wonder what it stands for?

Rainforest Alliance certified coffee is a movement that protects the delicate balance between thriving ecosystems and sustainable livelihoods. This certification focuses on social, economic, and environmental responsibility.

It means the coffee is grown on farms that actively conserve native forests, protect local waterways, and foster biodiversity. It also ensures that farmworkers are provided with safe working conditions, fair wages, and essential human rights.

The Rainforest Alliance has even expanded into certified regenerative agriculture, helping farmers build up soil health and stay resilient against climate change.

It is all about ensuring the long term future of coffee farming while respecting the people who harvest the cherries.

See you at the 2027 WV Coffee Festival on April 17th, 2027 in Charleston WV!
