Discover Reflections: A Solo Exhibition by Joshua Parks.

On view in the Ruth and Bill Baker Gallery, Reflections brings together eight years of Parks’ visual journey through the Lowcountry. From intimate moments with family and community to photojournalistic work and staged portraiture.

Together, these photographs create an evolving archive of Lowcountry African descendants and the landscape that has shaped them, while exploring themes of memory, place, identity, and cultural continuity.

As Parks writes, “Each image captures a moment in time,” inviting us to look closely, and consider the deeper truths held within each frame.

Go deeper into Reflections on September 3, when Joshua Parks joins scholar Mary Trent for a special conversation exploring the relationships and research behind the exhibition—including preserving familial histories, peopling the archive, and the ever-evolving visual culture of the Lowcountry.

Presented in collaboration with the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World Program (CLAW) at the College of Charleston.

Now is the perfect time to experience Mary Whyte: Salt of the Earth at the Gibbes Museum of Art. 🎨⁣

⁣
Making its premiere at the Gibbes, the Life Series is a powerful group of five large-scale, surreal watercolors. At first glance, the works appear to have the layered look of collage, but every intricate detail is created entirely through watercolor.⁣
⁣
The five paintings evoke the way we remember our lives in fragments, like pieces of a quilt. Connecting the works are sunflowers, hand-drawn by Whyte directly onto the museum wall, moving through different stages of bloom and creating a visual thread between the paintings.⁣
⁣
It’s an immersive, deeply personal exploration of memory, time, dreams, and the different stages of life, and something you truly need to experience in person.⁣
