On June 8 from 4–6 p.m., we are teaming up with Toby Turtle and other passionate local conservation partners to pick up litter from the beach and roadsides of Folly Beach to celebrate !

This event will begin beachside in front of the Tides hotel with opening remarks by partners and distinguished guests before we spread out to collect litter and litter data. Instructions will be provided to collect data, which will be recorded in the Litter Journal, a project in the South Carolina Aquarium Citizen Science app. Your participation directly impacts the beauty of our beaches, the future of our community and the resilience of our local ecosystems for generations to come!

No, those aren't veneers — porcupinefish teeth are fused into two plates, creating a set of strong, beak-like chompers designed to crush through the shells of crustaceans, urchins and other gastropods.

The best part of all? These calcium carbonate plates give our porcupinefish the appearance of a permanent smile 😉 Search for our three different porcupinefish in the Great Ocean Tank and say "Cheese"! 📸

Did someone say... World Otter Day?! 🦦

That's right — today and every day, our two North American river otter brothers deserve all the love! 💙 These adorable brothers instantly brought joy through their playful behavior and sleepy cuddles when they joined the Aquarium ranks in 2021. that river otters can reach speeds up to 12 mph while swimming and an impressive 18 mph on land? Fortunately, while under the water, otters can close their nostrils and ears for a smooth, aerodynamic swim.
