Wallisch Homestead Ice House
This is a line and wash painting I created showing the old Ice House at a local farmstead in New Jersey, the Garden State.
The Wallisch Farmstead (known as Wallisch Estate) is one of the last surviving large tracts of land that formed the original township of West Milford, located in northern New Jersey. The earliest known mention of the house is in a property deed from 1821.
Through the 1800s, the farmstead passed through several owners, and in 1912, the property was purchased for use as a dairy farm.
Louis Wallisch, Sr., purchased the property in 1923. After his death, his sons, John and Louis, maintained the property until their deaths in 1984 and 2001. The brothers witnessed the growth of West Milford from a rural farming community to the suburban enclave it is today, keeping their estate representative of the early heritage.
In 2013, the Friends of Wallisch Homestead (FOWH) was created as a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the property and use as a vibrant community educational and recreational center.
