The Charleston Ballet was formed in 1956 by Andre Van Damme. In 1989, Kim Pauley was appointed Artistic Director, becoming one of the very few women directors of a regional academy in the United States. For over 60 years, our troupe has enriched the cultural life of West Virginia by performing hundreds of traditional and original ballets.

The Charleston Ballet opens its 2026–27 season with the world premiere of The Legend of Mothman on October 23–24, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. at the WV Culture Center Theater.

Inspired by one of West Virginia’s most enduring legends, this original ballet brings the Appalachian cryptid to the stage through the choreography of K.R. Pauley, innovative projection technology by Carol and Mike DelGrosso, an original story by Deborah Novak, and a unique score by composer Matt Jackfert.

Come experience the legend through the power of dance, music, storytelling, and visual technology.

We’re excited to host the incredibly talented local artist Brandon Cremeans, whose work invites us to take a step back in time.

Brandon transforms pieces of old yearbooks into unique, nostalgic collages, giving memories, photographs, and forgotten pages a whole new life. His work is a beautiful reminder of the power of reuse, repurpose, and reimagine. What was once tucked away in an old yearbook becomes something timeless and meaningful all over again.

We are so grateful to everyone who showed up and shared in the excitement of bringing this beloved holiday tradition back to life.
