Batten Creative Recycling sails into Art Printing on old Dacron has had its share of challenges. The main issue was during the ink sealing process.

The art of printing on old sails:
Through countless experiments I finally figured out the proper methods to achieve the quality and style I was after for these prints. I was constantly facing the problem that no two sail manufactures use the same Dacron cloth and that meant changing up the printing methods for each new sail that was donated. In-between printing each color, the Dacron would warp an

d move from the heat thus creating color registration problems for the next color in the print. Finally I engineered a heat treating process that helps the sail keep its shape throughout the printing process, cutting the failure rate to less then 5% per run. Low environmental impact:
Keeping the sails out of the landfill is for sure a positive thing and I wanted to make every step of manufacturing these prints green as possible. From start to finish I lightly clean the sails with biodegrade solvents to remove rust and mildew. Next I print with plastisol inks, that contain no air-polluting solvents or volatile organic compounds. Finally the screens are cleaned with 100% biodegradable and non-toxic naturally made from 100% soybeans cleaner. Sail donations:
I truly love all the people who have donated their old sails and I’m always looking for donations. I cover the cost of your shipping so please contact me for more information on how sail donors receive exclusive rates on the prints! About:
I've taken my love of sailing, art, and the environment to a new level by turning used sails into prints. As old One-Design sailboat sails started to pile up in my garage I began experimenting with the idea of printing my art work on them. Each poster design I designed in Illustrator and screen printed myself. Each is hand signed and numbered. Each print is different and has a vintage, screen printed look. Because these are hand made no two prints are ever the same as each print is its own work of art. I also offer the ability to print your own sailboat design on your own sails. Contact me for more info and pricing for these options.
