I have been so very busy putting together this show for Public Works Art Center! I just love how it turned out! If you are local to the Summerville/Charleston area check it out and let me know if you find the mouse and the snake 🙃

It took a long time to needle felt the larger pieces, but now that I have finish this I am ready to work on some new video tutorials. Stay tuned!

I’m sitting here dreaming of spring so I thought that I would share this cute little needle felted chick project. They are so fun to make!
My favorite part is when they are a big fluff-ball right before it is time for them to get a trim.
If you find feathers tedious to make then this is the bird project for you!

First I wanted to apologize for taking such a long break from posting videos. My father went into the hospital and then I had a pretty bad lupus flare. I had to step back from something for a while and social media was it.

I am back now and looking forward to creating and sharing so many more videos and tutorial.

I hope you like this one on how to create a swan in a shadowbox. It is a little different from my usual sculptures so let me know what you think!

I am so happy to be back and can’t wait to hear from you all!

I am posting the link to my YouTube channel for anyone who wants to see some of my full length tutorials. A lot of the techniques I touch on in my reels are shown in depth here.

This is the final reel showing how I made my Eastern Bluebird. In the previous videos I showed how I made and built up the body. Now the fun happens where I get to turn it into a bird!

This video shows how I add the feathers to create the tail and wings. Then Merino wool is added to create the rest of the bird. I always mix several shades when I do this to create depth and variation.

Finally the bird is trimmed, groomed, and he finally starts to emerge from his fluff-ball! Now he just has to be mounted on wood and he is ready to go.

Last week I had a reel showing how I started the bodies for my birds, and today I want to continue with this process.

Once the core form has been created I add the legs to my body and wrap around this with wool. I continue to wrap the wool and needle felt it in layers until the finished core body is about 1/2 the size of my finished bird.

Once this is done I add my eyes, these are glass eyes on posts, and then build out the head around them with additional wool. I want to make sure the eyes are set into the wool at this point so they look more natural in my finished sculpture.

In the next video I will show how I add the tail, wings, and finishing colors.

Hi all! I wanted to share a more in depth look at the process I use to start my bird sculptures. I have found that twisting the wool into the wire creates a strong base to build my sculptures on.

Over the next week I will continue to show some of these more in depth looks at pieces of my process!

I was looking for a slightly quicker bird project so I made this little sandpiper. This sculpture does not have finished feathers and legs/feet so it is a little faster to make.

The most important thing I find is to make sure you add your wool in layers, felting each layer before you add the next one. This gives you a nice, firm core to build upon.

I also used steel spring wire for this particular sculpture. It holds a little stronger than most jewelry wire, and can create almost a fun bobble head effect.

To mount this bird I drill holes into my wood base and then insert the wire legs into these holes, gluing them into place.

Let me know if you have any questions about my process or tools!
