Charleston Opera Theater

Charleston Opera Theater Opera is not elitist, it is for everyone. Every person....every human. Opera, as an art form, portrays human emotions at their zenith, their most intense.

The highest highs, the lowest lows and everything in between. Just like we ALL experience every day regardless of socio-economic situation. Fear, anxiety, sorrow, joy, happiness, hopelessness, hope and love... things ALL humans experience. The emotion inherent in the art form is both sublime and extreme. Visceral human voices and intense emotion fuse together to create a transcendent experience fo

r the audience. There is so much division in the world today. We are all quick to offer our opinion, point fingers, blame, shame, cancel and condemn our fellow man. We have forgotten that we have more in common than we have that divides us: WE ARE ALL HUMAN! We all share the HUMAN CONDITION. Sometimes we need to be transported to a different time, a different place or a different culture to remind us of this simple truth: Opera need not take a side. Charleston Opera Theater is here to make you think...not tell you what to think. We are here to make you feel...not tell you what to feel. The themes in great master works of the operatic stage are about love, loss, betrayal, loyalty, evil, good, friendship, forgiveness and redemption and death. They teach us about humanity and remind us that one of greatest gifts we can offer our fellow humans is empathy. When an audience, from diverse and varying backgrounds joins in fellowship by attending a live performance, that shared experience creates a priceless bond binding our community and humanity together through that shared experience.

Yesterday, Charleston Opera Theater had the pleasure of performing at the annual picnic of our dear friends at the Dante Alighieri Society. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with beautiful music, delicious food, and the joy of celebrating the rich traditions of Italian culture together.

We are grateful for this longstanding friendship and for the opportunity to share our love of opera with such a warm and enthusiastic community.

Thank you for having us—we are already looking forward to the next time we gather!

We were thrilled to close out our Opera 101 Lecture Series on Kiawah Island with an engaging class on German Lied, exploring how composers like Beethoven and Schubert shaped the musical language that later defined the sweeping operatic works of Wagner and Strauss.

The session was led by Timothy McGowan. Timothy is currently an Assistant Professor at Florida School of the Arts, and a Doctoral Candidate in Vocal Performance at Stony Brook University.

A heartfelt thank you to all of our incredible presenters this season, as well as our generous series sponsors who made this program possible.
