Official Happy Retreat page operated by Friends of Happy Retreat
Happy Retreat, the stately Federal/Greek Revival style home of Charles Washington, founder of Charles Town and brother of our first President, stands on a hill overlooking Charles Town, surrounded by 12 acres of sloping lawns and woods. The non-profit Friends of Happy Retreat (FOHR) is partnering with the City of Charles Town to acquire, restore and preserve Happy Retreat for public use. Under this innovative partnership arrangement, the City will buy ten acres of the Happy Retreat property to incorporate into a grand park that will extend throughout the west end of Charles Town along senic Evitts Run. FOHR will buy the Happy Retreat mansion and surrounding two acres of land. FOHR will restore the house and its 18th Century outbuildings to use as a center for history, heritage tourism, scholarship and culture. This is the only official site for Happy Retreat where you will see updates, event dates, cancellation dates and important notices about Historic Happy Retreat. VISION FOR THE USE OF HAPPY RETREAT
FOHR and Charles Town have joined with top experts in historical preservation, heritage tourism, parks and recreation, non-profit management and fundraising to identify feasible and sustainable uses for the 6,000+ square foot mansion, four outbuildings and 12 acres estate. Extensive expert analysis has already been conducted, including historical preservation and restoration assessments, use planning and architectural design. Although there could be a variety of flexible and attractive uses for the property, FOHR and Charles Town believe this approach is highly viable, and we seek to work with key organizations to move forward with this vision.

A beautiful Dedication Ceremony was held at Happy Retreat recently honoring the Funkhouser and Fithian Families celebrating their enduring commitment to the restoration and preservation of Happy Retreat. A beautiful day and beautiful people.

It was a beautiful day to celebrate how far we’ve come. We dedicated the new Happy Retreat Bridge to Chet Hines, a man who shows his dedication through action. Chet has given many hours to clear the trails, and make the land accessible for all to enjoy. Thank you to staff, current and former City Council, the CT Parks Board, and Chet, for making this possible.

ACMF is excited to bring you a dynamic, fun and exhilarating season of four unforgettable hour-long concerts, focusing around various holidays throughout the year. In the tradition of the word “festival”, what better way to remember the joy, fun and reverie of annual traditions than through live music that takes us away from the everyday?

Seated in the intimacy of the parlors at Happy Retreat, audiences can enjoy chamber music played in a 19th Century parlor, where the acoustics of the space are perfectly suited to experience these present and engaging performances. Curated by the Appalachian Chamber Music Festival, the concerts assemble high-caliber musicians of both regional and international renown.

Full list of concerts include:
Sunday, October 25 | Haunting Sounds: Celebrating Autumn and All Hallows’ Eve
Sunday, December 20 | Holiday Horns with the NSO Brass
Sunday, February 14 | Strings Attached with Audrey Gray & Schuyler Slack
Sunday, March 14 | Irish Tales, Airs and Jigs: St. Patrick’s day celebration from Ireland

Tickets are $35 or you can enjoy all four concerts for just $125 with a series pass. All concerts will be held at Happy Retreat, except the concert on March 14th will be at Zion Episcopal Church. All concerts begin at 3:00 PM.

We’re delighted to offer a limited number of reduced tickets for students and kids under 18 years of age. Our March 14th concert will offer free tickets to audience members under 18.
