What happens when two instruments enter into conversation?

In the latest edition of our video series, Chris Pendergrass, artistic planning manager, shares a glimpse into our upcoming performance featuring violinist Alexi Kenney and pianist Janice Carissa, exploring how the piano and violin interact to create something greater than the sum of their parts.

At the center of the program is The Wild Yes by composer and violinist Michi Wiancko, alongside works by Sibelius, Piazzolla, and inti figgis-vizueta. Together, these musical voices span geography, time, and tradition, inviting audiences to hear familiar works with fresh ears and discover unexpected connections between sounds.

What happens when music meets the changing landscape of a melting glacier?

In the latest edition of our video series, Amy Kolling, senior director of artistic and production, shares one element to look out for in Shifting Ground, our upcoming performance with violinist Alexi Kenney.

Pairing solo violin with projection art by Xuan, Shifting Ground brings music and the natural world into conversation. Through works by J.S. Bach and contemporary composers, the performance invites audiences to consider how we listen, what we notice, and how familiar sounds can take on new meaning when experienced alongside powerful imagery.

Presented in more than 40 cities globally, Renée Fleming’s Music & Mind now makes its long-awaited Carolina debut.
 
Fleming joins UNC School of Medicine faculty to explore what music can reveal about memory, movement, emotional well-being, and new approaches to care. 
 
After winter weather postponed their original conversation, all of the original panelists come together at last on the Memorial Hall stage, moderated by art and culture journalist Liza Roberts.
 
Don’t miss this opportunity to see leading experts explore the intersections of creativity and health.

What does a melting glacier sound like alongside a solo violin, and what could it have to do with J.S. Bach?

For violinist Alexi Kenney, “Bach is connected to everything.”

On October 21 at Moeser Auditorium, Kenney presents Shifting Ground, a program rooted in his lifelong relationship with Bach’s Chaconne, a landmark solo violin work he first heard at age 10.

The title nods to a Baroque “ground”: a repeating bass line varied over time. Works by Bach and contemporary composers follow that idea across generations, including one affecting piece that pairs live violin with the recorded sounds of a melting glacier.

With projection art by Xuan, Shifting Ground reveals connections between music that can seem worlds—and centuries—apart.
