What does a melting glacier sound like alongside a solo violin, and what could it have to do with J.S. Bach?

For violinist Alexi Kenney, “Bach is connected to everything.”

On October 21 at Moeser Auditorium, Kenney presents Shifting Ground, a program rooted in his lifelong relationship with Bach’s Chaconne, a landmark solo violin work he first heard at age 10.

The title nods to a Baroque “ground”: a repeating bass line varied over time. Works by Bach and contemporary composers follow that idea across generations, including one affecting piece that pairs live violin with the recorded sounds of a melting glacier.

With projection art by Xuan, Shifting Ground reveals connections between music that can seem worlds—and centuries—apart.

This season, Wonder Belongs to Everyone.

Over the coming weeks, we’re taking a closer look at each performance so you can find what draws you in.

We’re beginning with a performance we’ve been waiting for.
 
On October 13, soprano Renée Fleming will fill Memorial Hall with a program that pairs classical songs and contemporary works, accompanied by sweeping imagery from National Geographic.
 
Together, the music and film of Voice of Nature: the Anthropocene invite us to experience the beauty of the natural world, and consider its vulnerability.
 
Winter weather kept us from welcoming Fleming earlier this year, making it especially meaningful that she’ll now open our 2026–2027 season.

An eight-hour round trip from Blythewood, South Carolina for a performance that changed everything.

When Westwood High School students saw Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater live at Memorial Hall this spring, many were experiencing concert dance for the first time. They planned the trip themselves, from researching buses, advocating to their principal, and calling our box office to reserve tickets.
