Join WXYC in a birthday celebration of legendary piano player Professor Longhair. Born on Dec. 19, 1918. His recordings from the 1940s and 1950s became the foundation of New Orleans rhythm and blues. The professor combined Caribbean rhythms with the blues creating a distinctive sound that was emulated by the likes of Dr. John and Allen Toussaint. By 1970, Professor Longhair had all but disappeared, until a young Quint Davis found Longhair sweeping floors in a local record store and convinced Longhair to play for a new festival, the New Orleans Music Festival, reviving his career. Jazz incognito will be playing all the great hits, live versions, and covers by New Orleans musicians. In the last hour we’ll be playing the recent reissue of Live at the Queen Mary in its entirety . Happy birthday Professor Longhair!

Michael Chapman is the epitome of a lifer, and the September 16th Thursday Night Feature will celebrate the recently and dearly departed. His first few albums, on Harvest from 1969-1971, heralded a songwriter of gruff beauty whose acoustic guitar playing was often dazzling yet always soulful. Five decades later, Paradise of Bachelors provided a loving home for Chapman's final two albums. The Chapel Hill-based label was a fitting destination for this northern Brit, who inspired legions of American(a) musicians over the years and embraced many as collaborators and friends. A couple have been tapped to call in and share some of their favorite songs and stories. Requiescat, Michael Chapman. 9pm-midnight, only on WXYC-FM or on the web at wxyc.org

this thursday night: Dub International
One of the many great musical exports of the island of Jamaica was the invention in 1970 of Dub. A musical style featuring the drum and bass tracks of studio recordings and made the producer the leader of the band. The producer would use the drum and bass as a foundation and then manipulate the previously recorded horn, piano, guitar, and vocal tracks fading them in and out an adding affects such as an echo. Dub has since infected nearly every musical corner of our world being integrated into other cultures and producing new music never envisioned by these Jamaican producers. Join Jazz Incognito, with special guest Nth Degree, as we travel the world sampling Dub styles from the continents of Africa, South America, North America, Asia, and Europe.
