NTB Photography Purity in Imagery

Going into Philly today to see some friends - carrying my Nikon F6, 2 rolls of film and some primes. So stay tuned ... for two weeks from now 😀 ... Many good things come from waiting, even in this world of digital life!

These are taken on a walk with a Mamiya 645 AFD with an old Leaf digital back, using an 80mm lens (50mm equivalent for 35mm). So obviously the picture has been cropped to zoom the herron. Super impressed with the maintenance of the clarity despite the crop and zoom. The beauty of a medium format sensor (and this a 28 megapixel back). Set at shutter speed priority; ISO 200; 1/400 sec at f/4.5

Bracketing film - These are the high resolution scans of the negatives. All, except the 4th shot, column one, have been bracketed during the initial exposure. Remember, no immediate feedback when shooting film. So very important to bracket. My standard is 3 frames/0.7EV for general work; 5 frames/0.3EV for professional work. With a bit of work (mostly to make sure that crop dimensions are the same for each frame), the bracketed images can be combined in HDR software to get the best exposure; certainly not the same as working with Raw images from digital, but it does quite well.

Look Ma - no digital - Winter Plant ... A study in contrast and shadows. B&W - Street Pan 400 film (pushed 1EV in processing) from Japan Camera Hunter (JCH); shot with a Nikon N90S with a Tamron Lens. Film processed by North Coast Photographic Services in Carlsbad, CA, Scanned on an Epson Perfection V750 with Silverfast scanning software. Minimal tweaking in LR and Photoshop (spot removal primarily). Below from the JCH site:
Due to its sensitivity to red light, JCH StreetPan 400 is the optimum film for dawn, dusk and winter photography.
So go out and shoot some film - and remember to bracket, bracket, bracket ...!

So my traveling check in case is a medium Pelican. My walking cases are from Think Tank Photo. On this journey it is the Think Tank Photo street walker. On hikes it is usually the rotation 360.

Starting the journey to Scotland. Made a decision to only carry my prime lenses this time. Then the decision whether to take the 300mm lens. Finally made the decision to take it. Just don't want to be in the situation of saying, "boy, I wish I had the long lens".
