Superman ice cream is one of those Michigan things that makes perfect sense if you grew up here and sounds completely made up if you did not.
Three colors, usually red, blue, and yellow, packed into one cone. The exact flavor combination can vary by creamery, but the Michigan version commonly brings together blue moon, red pop, and lemon.
And somehow, it works.
Blue moon is the mystery at the center of the whole thing. It is especially associated with Michigan and the Great Lakes region, and trying to explain the flavor to someone who has never had it is almost impossible. Sweet? Yes. Familiar? Somehow. Easy to describe? Not really.
That may be part of why Superman ice cream carries so much nostalgia.
For generations of Michigan kids, nobody needed a flavor breakdown. You saw those colors behind the glass, pointed at the tub, and that was enough. The cone arrived looking almost too bright to be real, and the only problem was eating it before a Michigan summer afternoon turned it into a rainbow running down your hand.
Places like Moomers in Traverse City and small creameries across the state have kept that experience alive.
Michiganders who move away often discover something funny: Superman ice cream may exist elsewhere, but it rarely feels quite the same.
Maybe it is the blue moon. Maybe it is the red pop. Maybe it is just memory doing what memory does.
Three flavors, one cone, and a whole Michigan childhood hiding in the colors. Make sure you try a scoop next time you’re in Michigan.
