Recently, I found myself reflecting on the viability of keeping YellowFishMusicInk LLC operational, especially considering the $930 sales tax I was assessed despite not having made any sales. Unfortunately, I missed the deadline (tried multiple times yet could not access the web site this week I spent hours with tech in Albany to finally get in) to claim an exemption on the sales tax website, which led to this unexpected charge.
During a conversation with someone I hold in high regard, she expressed her belief that maintaining a music business at my age of 69 embodies a philosophy based on delusion. She suggested that success in this field often hinges on “who you know”. Which I believe is inherently out dated. Besides that thinking inevitably leads to the “P. Diddy Trap”. That perspective contrasts sharply with my own. My focus has always been on creating the best product possible, leveraging todays music instrument technology to enhance my work.
I believe this mindset aligns with a more independent philosophy—akin to the idea that you don’t need to rely on others to achieve your goals. In my view, there are no limitations on where you can go or what you can accomplish, if you stay true to your vision. As Bob Dylan famously said, “You gotta serve somebody.” For me, that service is to the Lord.
