Much like Walt Disney created Disneyland in 1955 to build a welcoming space for families, Dolly Parton partnered with the Herschend family in 1986 to transform Silver Dollar City Tennessee into Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. While Disney built parks around animated films, Dollywood was built around Parton's personal catalogue of music, Appalachian craftsmanship, local folklore, and her upbringing in the Great Smoky Mountains. Commentators and industry producers frequently describe Parton as "our generation's Walt Disney" because she understood that a great theme park relies on emotion, place, community, and lasting memories rather than just thrill rides.
