Your first assignment worked. So naturally, we have another one.

Take it to Open Stitch. Take it to Rhinebeck. Take it to the farmers market, the library, the grocery store, the school pickup line. Fill it with yarn. Let it do a little traveling.

We are thrilled to announce our October installment of the Sleeping Bear Yarn Club: Tamarack. Dyed for us by the talented Debbie of MurkyDepthsDyes in New York.

I had never lived so close to wetlands before this home—to the Cedar Swamp, where the seasons show themselves differently. I saw whole stands of pines turning yellow. Not a little at the tips. The entire tree lit up from top to bottom. I remember wondering if something had happened in the swamp to cause all these trees to die at once.

All summer it passes easily among the evergreens, green and quiet. Come autumn, it gives itself away. Every needle turns gold before dropping for winter—a conifer keeping its own kind of calendar among the hardwoods.

This colorway holds that October moment: deep swampy green, shadowed with charcoal and moss, paired with the sharp yellow-gold of a tamarack at its brightest.

Look at this devoted crew! Last Saturday I was late to open the shop and this was a heartwarming site to see 🫶 I snapped this photo at 10:02. They were more than ready to start the morning together—no matter where it was. I love having these creatives around me!

Took the extra effort to stop by and spend some time with her. She praised my efforts with these treats of Leland Blue and fossils. They make me think and imagine as I find them.

What was the smelting like when it was happening?

What did the water look like as these glass pieces were formed?

What was the world like when these pieces of coral were alive and thriving?

As I work to shake off my own darkness, today I am remembering those traumatic words “Nine Eleven”. This muscle memory can unearth the pain from that day and I was sitting in Michigan watching on a screen. What a drop in the bucket that feeling must be to so many.

What horror to be in those buildings.

What pain losing parents, spouses, or your children that way.

A day for remembering. And take note, among other things, this earth is here for your emotional healing too.
