It's my first day back from maternity leave! I feel like the time between the baby being born in June and dropping my kids off at their first day back to daycare this morning was a complete whirlwind, albeit a good one (baby snuggles galore).

If you've messaged me about a photo shoot and have been waiting a few days for a reply, please know the wait will be over soon! I have my new planner ready, my to-do list is made, and I'm going to knock out all replies by the end of the day. Back to work I go. I'm excited for everything I have planned for this fall, including photo shoots, bell choir concerts, music performances, art classes, etc. Talk to you soon, friends.

Soaking in my last weekend of maternity leave. Back to normal Kayza & Vine Creative endeavors on Monday. I’m excited for this upcoming fall season! I have photo shoots scheduled, bell choir presentations to make, art to create, and photography classes to plan. Life is good.

Last week, my family was blessed with a new addition. When I was going through my newborn photography containers trying to decide what to bring to the hospital for him to wear, I couldn’t resist this gold pom pom hat. Isn’t it great?

I’m going to be taking maternity leave for the rest of the summer, although I will be periodically checking my email. All of my in-progress photo galleries have been delivered, and I’m ready to soak in as many newborn snuggles as I can. 💛

Do you want to know what life as a professional photographer is like? I'll tell you a little story to give you an idea.

The name of this story is "scratch disks full."

Long story short, I tried to free up space on my computer yesterday and accidentally deleted my entire Lightroom library. Luckily, I back up all original photos in three different places, as well as all finalized galleries... but not the in-process edited photos. Professional photographer life is re-editing an entire gallery when you originally only had three photos left to edit. Professional photographer life is finding yourself still enjoying the editing process, even though you've done these photos before. Professional photographer life is feeling almost giddy to send them because you actually love your edits more this second time around, and you can't wait for your client to see them.

As I was editing this gallery (the second time), I said to my husband, "Do you want to see one of the most beautiful babies I've ever seen?" He said, "This had better be a photo of one of my children." I turned my computer around and said, "Okay, besides our kids. Look at this baby's eyes! Look at that smile! She is so unbelievably cute." That sweet, smiling baby face ranks up there as one of my favorite photos of all time.
(Also, I need that incredible floral rug in my own house)

Soak up as much summer sunshine as you can, sip lemonade with someone you love, and spin until you're dizzy. I tried to go with an "s" theme for that caption since this family consists of Sarah, Sean, and Stella the dog. I think they need a giant S hanging on their front door.

On a different note, I only have two galleries left to finish and send out before I am DONE for the spring and summer due to maternity leave. Once I know what my fall schedule will look like, I'll start scheduling for fall. I'll keep you posted on both when my fall schedule will open and when the baby is born. You can bet there will be pictures, many of them. Stay tuned.

The ped mall is one of my favorite locations for a photo shoot. There are murals, textured brick walls, and painted benches, not to mention the inevitable stop at Yotopia afterward 🍦 Pair the casual vibe of downtown Iowa City with the sleek interior of Voxman Music Building, and a perfect photo shoot is in order.

On another note, it’s hard to believe I’ve had my last photo session for the spring. In preparation for upcoming maternity leave, I’ve concluded photo shoots to allow myself enough time to completely edit and send out my to do list of sessions before this little dude is full-term. 40 days until due date!

Over the weekend, this handsome devil graduated with his PhD. Congratulations, my love. It’s a blessing being married to such a dedicated, compassionate, and wonderful human. I’m happy for you that you’re going to get more sleep at night now that your dissertation is written.
