Remember the water troughs earlier this week? Here are some historical facts about them! Beginning in the 1850s Lorenzo’s second owner, Ledyard Lincklaen, along with his brother and father sponsored the placement of water troughs for public use along Cazenovia area roads. Ledyard Lincklaen’s water troughs were discussed in the December 1865 issue of the American Agriculturalist which explained that the water was brought through hollowed pine logs from near-by springs and then rose into the stone structure to pour out of a copper pipe into the trough. A cup on a chain allowed people along with their animals to partake in the refreshment. Lorenzo State Historic Site

In 2016 as a way of giving back to the community for 40 years of support and in celebration of Lorenzo Driving Competition’s Ruby Jubilee, members of the Lorenzo Driving Competition cleaned three overgrown historic horse troughs around Cazenovia and planted them with flowers. Most of the Cazenovia horse troughs were placed by members of the founding Ledyard family and are located along East Lake Road, No. 9 Road, and tucked into the back of the Lorenzo State Historic Site. If you’re local to Cazenovia take a drive around town and see if you can spot them! Pictured is LDC Board members Judy Sears and Weese Sullivan Moore working their magic. Check out these before and after shots!

April showers may bring May flowers, but June brings the unveiling of the 2026 LDC poster. With a nod to our past, this year's poster is built on the same artwork as our first show. Join us July 17-19 as we celebrate 50 years of a Midsummer Classic at the Lorenzo State Historic Site, Cazenovia.
