How can there even be so much trash? People came to Tire Day and told me about new sites I'd never heard of before! We keep making progress at every Clean Sweep, but the list remains long! Come help us get it ALL picked up, we can use all the help we can get!

Not to mention, the June Clean Sweep is a pizza & ice cream party! Where else can you do great community work and then sit in the shade with grilled artisan pizza as your reward?

All are welcome! Join the fun and help us get all that trash out of our public woodlands! Coffee, donuts snacks and lunch are provided! Bring water bottles, gloves, and sturdy shoes. Pickup trucks for hauling trash are always much appreciated!!

Tire Day was a very popular event again this year! We just sent 4,500 old tires out of the valley. Last year we filled six trailers and we thought that was astonishing; this year we planned for a big turnout again with six trailers - but ran out of space and had to order a seventh. How can there be so many tires in this one little valley? Anyway it was a fun day of slinging tires!

4,500 tires at the transfer station at $25/tire would have cost residents $112,500! Wow!

Huge thanks to the Josephine County Solid Waste Agency for funding this project! Also thank you so much to the Oregon Caves Chevron for letting us use the ginormous parking lot, and sending staff to help load tires, and for all the de-rimming that they are facing. Thank you to Yeti's for the ice cream! And the biggest thanks to the 25 or more people who came out early on a Saturday morning to unload and load all those tires! We could never pull this off without all that help, especially all the energy that all those kids and young adults brought! We appreciate our volunteers so much!

Why on earth doesn’t Oregon have extended producer responsibility for tires? Why can’t it be like the bottle deposit, where we pay a few dollars of deposit per tire when we buy any new tires, and then we could take any tires back to any tire dealer to get the deposit back at the end of the tire’s life? This would add a trivial amount of money to the price of new tires, while virtually guaranteeing a dramatic reduction in the number of tires that are disposed of by being heaped in backyards, or dumped over ravines in the woods. Oregon, of all states, should have this!

Tire Day is fun and epic, but it would be even more fun to see it become obsolete, which it would if you could get a few dollars back for each tire you take back to a tire dealer, at any time in the year!

BTW, Tire Day is tomorrow!

Don't forget, Tire Day is this Saturday! Let's get rid of all those old tires with all the chemicals they leach and all the mosquitos they hatch - send them out of our watershed!
Regular rims are fine. Old-style split rims are not allowed.
The parking lot behind the Chevron will open at 8 am and not earlier!

Last year we collected 4,200 during the 3-hour event...so we unloaded 20 tires per minute! This year we think we could still use a few additional volunteers; please call us at the number on the poster if you'd like to volunteer to help unload tires with us!

We have some fun pictures from last year, plus a video, on our website: www.themotherline.org/clean-sweep

We have a lot more information about what toxins are leaching out of tires, what is in the dust they generate, what happens to the tires that we collect for recycling, what might be a better system for tire disposal, and more, in this week's Motherline newsletter:

The next Clean Sweep is only one month away! Come out for the epic trash cleanup, and stay for the pizza and ice cream party!

We'll be working in the Selma area again, so meeting at Deer Creek Grange once more:
Saturday, June 13, 2026, 8-noon
3750 Lakeshore Drive, Selma
Trash cleanup at 8 am; pizza at noon
Coffee, donuts, snacks, pizza, and ice cream provided!
Bring gloves, water bottles, closed-toe sturdy shoes, and jeans.

We are hoping to finish up with ALL the trash in the Selma area this time! Then the July Clean Sweep will get to tackle a new area entirely!

Come out and work alongside neighbors and new friends while returning our beautiful woods to a more natural state! If you haven't explored in the Deer Creek area very much, it's gorgeous, and you should take this chance to come explore with us while picking up trash!
