Hobbies in the first year of my sobriety included, but were not limited to:
- sitting down on chairs,
- sobbing quietly,
- killing bonsai trees,
- planning relapses,
- planning holidays where I would relapse,
- not relapsing, thank God,
- thanking God I didn’t relapse,
- completely changing my “look,”
- wearing colorful Nike basketball shoes,
- not finishing school programs I was enrolled in,
- getting fired from jobs I wasn’t emotionally prepared for,
- abandoning atheism,
- abandoning agnosticism,
- trying out Buddhism,
- trying out Christianity,
- returning to agnosticism,
- returning to Christianity, but without the dogma,
- trying not to go to McDonald’s,
- going to the club and leaving after 20 minutes,
- going to McDonald’s,
- exhaustively explaining to my family and friends how recovered I am by the grace of God,
- thinking I get it,
- realizing I don’t get it (but still secretly thinking I get it),
- getting it lol,
- staring at the ceiling on Sunday afternoons wondering what people do when they aren’t cursing God for their miserable hangover,
- sitting down on chairs.
