In designing our birdhouse, we researched what types of birds used fixed vs hanging houses, their preferred hole-size & whether or not they wanted a perch. We ended up with a two piece design where the lid is held in place by a sliding knot, so it is easy to clean between nesting & at the end of the season.
It is the ideal size for small birds, such as an Eastern Bluebird, a Carolina Wren, an Ash-Throated Flycatcher, a Violet-Green Swallow or a House Wren. It provides a lovely pop of color when hung from low-hanging branch.
As avid hikers, we wanted to honor the Catskills in a series of sculptural bowls that evoked a sense of the landscape around us. Those hard edges of rock ledges and cliffs, the softness of moss covered rocks, the hollows where bodies of water form amidst the rising of mountains.

Both Lucie & I are a little camera shy & rarely put our faces out there, but this is us!
I’m on the left, and Lucie on the right. We met around 2000 at the Byrdcliffe clay studio in Woodstock. We shared a house together just up the hill from the ceramics studio & remained friends afterwards.
In 2011, we both had young puppies & studios at our respective houses. We started weekly puppy-play-dates mixed with get-stuff-done-dates. I’d go to Lucie’s one week, she’d come to mine the next. It was during these days that we both realized that we each had multiple floral tins of past pets. As ceramic artists, we both had wanted to give them resting places that were more personalized, but had not yet gotten to it. We decided to work together to create a line of pet urns that were simple, modern & personalized. We started looking for a space and decided on the village of Catskill. It had an appealing (& intact) downtown and was about equidistant from both of our houses. And L&M Studio was born!
We had so much fun collaborating that it didn’t take long until we expanded our line to house and garden wares, sculptural bowls and lighting.

At craft shows, people endlessly asked us to design noodle bowls.
So, we started talking while doing other things in the studio. What did we want in a noodle bowl, what characterized something that would be called a noodle bowl? We decided on specific points:
- hot broth
- chopsticks
- and a sipping point
Using our process (slip-casting) as a reference point, we decided on a double-walled bowl (ease of carrying hot bowl to table) - with a narrow edge for sipping. Chopssticks can live on a lovely level rim. All points taken care of! We decided to make a th*****me. A biggie for udon or salad, the middle for ramen & the little for toppings? (also great for ice cream). The beautiful thing is that you get to choose! With the color on the rim, there is an endless supply of fun! This set won an international award for design. We went to Milan & Lake Cuomo for the award ceremony! - M
One of the events we missed most last year was the Basilica Farm and Flea in Hudson, we’re so excited to be returning this year! They have made some changes for vendor and visitor safety: doors open for airflow, more space between vendors and staggered entrance for visitors. So dress warmly and get all your holiday shopping done in one place. Basilica Hudson
There are a few items in the kitchen that I reach for all the time. A little silicone spatula that I'm constantly taking out of the dishwasher to wash and use again, a very small whisk and these little prep bowls.
We use them for almost everything, salads, nuts, berries, condiments, oatmeal, ice cream and most satisfyingly- for mis en place.
I have to give credit to for all this lovely prep and for making some delicious spicy, sticky, garlicky broccoli 😙👌

We work in collaboration.
That means, when we are designing new items, one of us starts something & then we hand it off to the other. We usually talk things out, so we know what we are looking for. With our facet mugs, I threw the basic shape on the wheel - completely solid & up-side-down. Lucie then made the facets & then cast the new sides of some plaster slabs of burned wood.
It took us a while to decide where we wanted the handle; if it was on a faceted side, then the mug would effectively be either right or left handed. We did find some left & right handed couples that LOVED this! They could get ‘matching’ mugs, yet still know which mugs were theirs. While we will make lefty or righty mugs on order, we have decided on the universal between. We both use these mugs on a daily basis. The angle of the facet makes a spout for you to drink from. -M
*updated shop hours*

We are often in the studio much earlier than noon and much later than 4 so if you can’t make those hours, please reach out to see if we’re in.

Nothing like a cup of tea on a rainy fall day. My favorite at the moment is Turmeric Ginger with pieces of dried apple for sweetness & lemongrass, cardamom & hibiscus to round out the flavors. Delicious!

Our bud vases are part of a series of vases inspired by both cityscapes and rock formations. The strong angular lines mixed with glimpses of hidden shapes and spaces create a dynamic environment for the lush beauty of flowers.
This series of vases range from just a single opening up to 9 openings (as seen here). Each component is slip-cast porcelain and joined by hand.

We thought we’d share a little bit of what is happening in our kitchens while we all continue to limit interactions with the outside world, yet try to find joy at home. It’s Meg posting, just FYI. I’m on week 3 of not grocery shopping & we (Rennie & I) are well into relying on veggies that stay edible in the fridge for a long time. Tonight we had a cabbage, shredded carrot & radish salad topped with poached chicken breast from the freezer. We usually have this salad with pan fried tofu, but no grocery store for 3 weeks = the tofu is long gone! What makes this work, imho, is the miso dressing.... inspired by Nana’s Japanese Cafe in Alfred, NY. It’s been 15 years since I had the honor to eat Nana’s food & I’m kind’a sure this dressing is nothing like hers, but it hits all those nostalgic buttons for me. I often tinker with it - garlic if I’m in the mood. Soy sauce if I need a little more saltiness... you get the point. Anyway- the basic recipe for the dressing:
A 1/2 inch chunk of ginger, finely grated
2-3 TBS rice vinegar
1/2 tsp Morin
About 1/4 cup white miso
Dollop of toasted sesame oil
1/8 cup olive oil
1/8 cup water (more to thin as needed)
I put everything in a wide-mouthed ginger jar & zap with the immersion blender.
Toasted sesame seeds & dried oregano (I know sounds weird, but it works! & Nana added it’s- so it definitely is the way to go 😂) on top or mixed into the salad. Yum!
I served our salads tonight in a couple of L&M noodle bowls. Perfect!
Be well everyone! We miss seeing all of you at shows!

Mixing our porcelain slip. It was a challenge to find a recipe that would work for our large sculptural pieces as well as smaller functional work. Eventually we had to consult a ceramic engineer and now we have a nice dependable slip.
L dumping slip from one of our *new* pieces. I can't wait to see them out & about in the world. We still have a bunch of logistical design work to do on them, but each step is cause for a mini celebration.
