Our production company, Kaliyuga Arts, was originally founded in Los Angeles, California in 1986. From its inception, it has been dedicated to the presentation of off-beat, challenging work, and has established an ever-expanding reputation for artistic excellence with a wide range of material. Kaliyuga Arts is now the resident theatre company at Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill, NY.

In 2012 Kaliyuga Arts presented its first Upstate New York production, Lanford Wilson's THE MOUND BUILDERS, and it was selected as one of the ten best productions of 2012 by Metroland. For our second outing we presented the area premiere of TRUE LOVE LIES by Canadian playwright Brad Fraser.

Poor Super Man

We're continuing our journey with Brad Fraser with Shelley's Shadow at Bridge Street Theatre. Here are reviews from the first one, Poor Super Man, SF 1997.

"Clever and witty and definitely worth seeing! The play is almost cinematic in form, shifting swiftly from one locale to another and with dialogue which is terse, sparse and sometimes brutally realistic ... Excellently staged by John Sowle and well acted by its cast ... Tall, lean and hard-muscled S...

Today (August 19) marks the anniversary of the assassination of Federico Garcia Lorca. One of our proudest accomplishments as producers (and human beings) is that we were able to present the U.S. premiere of his play EL PUBLICO in a tiny waiver house in Los Angeles back in 1989.

Sad news. Conflicts have arisen and we've had to postpone our screening of JD Urban's Bridge Street Belly Dance documentary, BEFORE, originally scheduled for Saturday evening August 28. We'll be sure to keep you informed on the new screening date as soon as we're able!

Here's our final 2021 Winter Dance Residency video, premiering tonight at 7pm. This is officially also a Guggenheim Works & Process video which includes Duke Dang interviewing the dancers as well as excerpts from Trapped, which they will perform live at the Guggenheim Museum tomorrow night. I think there are a few tickets left if you happen to be in the city.

It's the Birthday of Gertrude Stein. Kaliyuga Arts had a deep connection to Stein's work: Our very first production was Al Carmines' musical version of her one-act A CIRCULAR PLAY and our final production in Manhattan was a revival of the same show, IN CIRCLES, at Judson Church just off Washington Square, where the show had its original premiere. We also presented her play DO LET US GO AWAY.A PLAY on a double-bill with Ned Rorem's opera version of her THREE SISTERS WHO ARE NOT SISTERS in San Francisco as part of EXIT Theatre's 1998 Absurdist Series.

Remember JD Scalzo (Rowdy in our pre-BST production of Brad Fraser's KILL ME NOW over in Hudson)? He wound up in San Francisco for a while afterwards and starred as Patroclus in this production for New Conservatory Theatre Center there in 2017. They'll be streaming an archival video at no cost between January 26 and February 23. Should definitely be worth checking out. We do love us some JD (AND also some "Iliad").

🚨Streaming Alert🚨
We're thrilled to announce our release of the filmed dress rehearsal of 2017's critically acclaimed production, "warplay". Streaming free from Jan 26-Feb 23rd, don't miss your chance to revisit this powerful production.

Thus far we've been bringing in outside productions we feel our audiences should have a chance to see - ECHOES OF IRELAND, QUIET ELECTRICITY, THE R**E OF LUCRECE - but this will be our first self-produced presentation at Bridge Street Theatre. It's an exquisite and touching piece told through a series of letters between three small-town Southern women, friends from their childhood in the Great Depression till old age in the early years of the 21st Century. Think it'll really resonate with our audiences here. 3 performances only, March 13-15.
Actual closing on the Bridge Street Theatre building is now scheduled for 11:30am November 1st. Looks like we're actually making that leap!
From the Archives: SUBJECT TO FITS, a musical response to Dostoyevsky's "The Idiot" by Robert Montgomery at EXIT Theatre in San Francisco. With (from left) Larry Spenler, Beth Donohue Templeton, and Dan Carbone. Utterly brilliant show which I hope we'll get a chance to revive someday at Bridge Street.
