- FUNDS APPROVED FOR VETS CENTER AT OLD LIBRARY - This week the Alameda County Board of Supervisors supported a total of $8.5 million be used to design and renovate the former library building on Redwood Road.
“Castro Valley is united behind this building being used for Veterans and community use,” asserted Supervisor Nate Miley during a Board of Supervisors meeting last year when the topic was discussed.
Future use for the building will rely on a partnership between Alameda County and the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, who will program and operate the space, in partnership with the community.
In addition to serving as primary home for Castro Valley’s Veterans organizations, the site is expected to be home for displays from the collection of the Castro Valley History Museum nonprofit organization.
The building has been vacant since 2009, when the new library on Norbridge Avenue first opened. Since 2017, volunteers with the American Legion Post 649 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9601 have tirelessly pushed for a Veterans community center at the 10,239-square-foot building.
The $8.5 million for the rehabilitation will come from Alameda County's Measure W.
While the Board action on June 2 confirmed the technical aspects of the funding allocation, more details will be finalized around the ALCO Economic and Civic Department’s (ECD) upcoming budget. The ECD agency is currently in the process of securing an architect for the renovations.
