Hello everyone, As you have noticed I have not posted any classes or really any info for weeks and I apologize for the lack of communication. I wanted to update/inform everyone as to why. I have Systemic Lupus, Lupus Nephritis, Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis ... finally diagnosed at the end of last year after a year of various health struggles. As with many auto immune diseases it can be a struggle. Several weeks ago I got the flu which had me down for about ten days but then it basically snowballed into various other Lupus related health issues. This initially landed me into the ICU for several days, then back home for maybe 5 days and then back into the hospital, this time in critical care ICU for a week. I was discharged just this past Thursday but am still weak and struggling with sleep. This truly has been a challenge and I am so disappointed that I have not been able begin my classes. However I have faith that over the next several days I can get some sleep, eat and regain my strength so I can at least schedule a couple of classes over the break, and then after the New Year establish set weekly classes. I thank you all in advance for your patience and understanding and I cannot wait until that happens.
FYI before Christmas I would definitely like to offer a couple of woodburning classes and a couple of other classes where the kiddos could make Christmas presents...maybe an album clock class, beginning acrylic paint class similar to canvas and cocktails .but obviously not the cocktails! The kiddos could leave with a finished painting that could be a Christmas present.
Sorry for rambling, that's what sleep deprivation does to you. Feel free to message me with any questions and/or if you have a child that would be interested in taking one of those classes before Christmas. Again I am truly sorry that it's taken me this long to update everyone, this all has thrown me for a loop and been a bit overwhelming. I hope you are all well and are having fun preparing for the holidays. Thank you! MJ

Here are some examples of some wood burned wall art that could be completed in The Intro to wood burning class. I will have transfer paper to help transfer designs onto the wood piece or they can be free hand sketched. You child is welcome to bring in a design, use one of those on hand in class, or just free style it. Check the post below for the first class offering tomorrow afternoon. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/342344009157965163/

Sunset - Art Block - Wood burning

11/10/2018

Hola everyone!! Boy Friday came really quick! I will be posting all upcoming classes tomorrow that are planned for now, but there is also some wiggle room in the Hobby Lobby classroom for some last minute add ons, so keep your eyes peeled for these and as always I welcome feedback/input. Also if some classes have a significant wait list I will add a second class offering.

For now i am offering a last minute Intro/Beginners "Pyrography" or Wood Burning Class tomorrow Saturday the 10th from 4pm - 6:30pm. I am really on the fence about the age range for this class primarily because some kiddos have more experience with crafting, using tools as others, especially when using things that can burn you..like hot glue guns..we know even us adults end up getting burned!

My daughter was 11 when she started, but then again she is the youngest of 6 and has a mother who is an artist/wood worker. So perhaps 12 yrs - and up could be a good starting point. Safety of course will be addressed right off the bat, and reinforced on a consistent basis. But someone always gets burned eventually. The wood burning tools I supply for the class do not get nearly as hot as the professional grade wood burners, but they are still hot. I have ice packs, salve, and band aids ready just in case and I will have each parent sign a basic waiver.

Your child will be introduced to the tool itself, learn how to hold it, use it safely, and change the tips safely. I have prepared sample boards so they can see the different effects you get from each tip. I will demonstrate each tip and then they will have their own sample board to practice on. Once they feel confident we will break for some pizza, drinks and dessert and Ill give them a chance to walk around and look at everyone's boards, ask questions and further demonstrate if needed. (If your child wants to pack a dinner that is fine as well) Then they will each choose one prepared board to use for their wall art piece. I will have many examples of designs to show them, or they can sketch their own. I will encourage them to sketch it on their boards, practice more on their board if they need to and of course guide them along the way. There will be paints and India ink pens to embellish their design if need be. After its completed to their satisfaction I will show them how to properly seal it, and attach a hanger. Depending on time, they will have an option of a second project I will also have slices of tree branches and twine available for them to use up any additional time and make some Christmas ornaments.

Please note that this class can be a one time thing or it can build on itself. Once your child is comfortable with the basics, they can move on the intermediate class or participate in the beginner class if the time is better for you, and I will just accommodate his/her needs like an independent study situation. This would also be ideal for home school hours. They will also learn more about the different kinds of woods, learn how to sand and prep surfaces for wood burning.

Unlike many places that offer these classes, I will have all of the supplies needed: wood burning tool, tips, pliers for changing tips, wet washcloths, heat proof working surface, a variety of shapes, sizes of wood, slices of tree branches, twine, polyurethane, paints, India ink pens, brushes, latex gloves, snack or meal depending on the time of day and of course music for inspiration :)

Again bear with me as I am ramping up for all these classes...I'm a little long winded, just want to cover all of my bases. I also had to do a fair amount of research for pricing all of my classes. I last taught in NY so their pricing is higher than what I am finding in this area plus having 6 daughters who were all artistically inclined I am very mindful of budgets!! This first class may be a great time to have that date night, or girls night out!!

The only wood burning class I even found within a 30 mile radius is $25 for a 1 1/2 hour class for adult beginners and you have to buy all of your own materials, including the wood burning tool. So I will price this class at $45.00. It will be in the classroom at the back of the Castle Rock Hobby Lobby. For those who may have kiddos that get out of school at 4pm , I can accommodate them as well. IF they can arrive by 4:15 I can let them stay 15 minutes late to finish up, and i can start cleaning up after the other kids.

You can register for the class either my private message me, email me at [email protected]. I would want your childs name, age, school attending or home school, address, parent's email address, contact info, and as far as payment goes for this time I will accept cash/check at the time of class, Chase Quickpay or Zelle using the email address above, could even do Paypal if I am not charge a fee :) Going forward I will most likely ask for half down at least to secure a spot. I will post my cancellation policy and payment options going forward tomorrow. I am also going to offer things like a punch card for classes and when full you get a free class. Another idea Ive been tossing around is if there is a parent or older child that is responsible they could be my class room helper for the classes with younger age children or labor intensive classes. They would get a free class for doing so. As i said, I know how challenging it can be financially to get quality classes of any kind to fit your budget.

Do not hesitate to message me, email me or call me with questions- 303-902-4917. And if you made it to the end of this post you have earned.....a huge thank you:) I really look forward to expanding your kids horizons!

Update: look for class schedules this weekend for the upcoming week, month and the month of December. Along with some traditional classes such as sketching, pastels, painting I will be offering some wood burning classes both beginner and intermediate, mixed media art, recycle art sculptures, make your own vinyl record clock, Pop Art, Printmaking.Step by step paint the Aspens ( great class for teens to give for Christmas gift), Nightmare before Christmas and evening with jack the Pumpkin King, Wood slice wall art project (another good one for Christmas presents to give), so many more.
I will offer a variety of options with regards to time of day, especially over the breaks. And there will be longer 4 and 6 week offerings and one day classes as well. The Nightmare before Christmas class and the All things Harry Potter will be around 4 hours in length with the intention that parents can use that time to shop for the holidays, date night, pamper yourself, etc, lunch.dinner will be served.
For example the Harry Potter class will be taught by Professor Treelawney (aka me :) gives me an excuse to dress up) kids will make their own wands, enroll in both potions and spells classes, make their own hogwarts wooded directional sign, I will be playing the movies as well, so much fun. Dressing up encouraged

Nightmare before Christmas, kids will paint a set of Nightmare before Christmas ornaments, make your own nightmare before Christmas night lite. Movie trivia game with prizes, play the movie while painting, frost and decorate theme related Christmas cookies to take home.

Preschoolers, kindies can look forward to "Lily's Purple Plastic Purse- color theory a study in purple", "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom",

Early elementary offerings will be the basics but also classes incorporate art education introducing artists such as Van Gogh, Mondrian, Picasso, Po***ck, Monet, Kandinsky, Goergia O'Keefe, kids can be Michelangelo for a day and lay on their backs under the tables painting just like he did when painting the Sistine Chapel. So many ideas and most are classes I taught years ago.

For the older teens there will be some ongoing class offerings rolling out next year but in the meantime I want to offer some longer classes such as "Create your own generational furniture art". For my business MJ Designs I have in the past done a line of furniture where I decoupaged historical photos of Castle Rock onto furniture. primarily side tables, entry way tables, etc. I have also done the same using old family photos that the client supplied spanning generations. These pieces are so incredible, unique and become heirloom pieces in their homes. What a fun project all around, parents you will help your teen gather images that can be used, he/she will pick a piece of furniture from a photo gallery ahead of time, measurements and prices will be provided ahead of time and will be from Goodwill and Salvation army finds..so very reasonably priced, This also would be another great class for them to create a one of a kind gift.

Fluid art, pen and ink drawing, I had the pleasure of taking classes with Chuck Close many years ago. Chuck Close is an American painter, artist and photographer who achieved fame as a photorealist, through his massive-scale portraits. Close often paints abstract portraits of himself and others, which hang in collections internationally. He is well known for his pixel portraits using various mediums. So I will be offering a portaits in pixels class as well.

Please share this page with friend and/or family you think would be interested. I also would love any suggestions you may have for classes and/or dates times that would be ideal. Of course for school aged childen/teens we are talking about after school, weekends and breaks.

Thank you for reading!!!

Good evening, For those of you who have liked my page, thank you. Just an FYI I will be changing the name of the page to MJ's Art Academy although its not letting me do it on here yet I hope to get some support tomorrow so i dont have to delete the page and start over. I was contacted today by a Kidzart franchise owner with concerns about the name of my business being too similar to theirs and possible infringements on their international trademark name.

I disagreed saying that although part of the names are similar Kidzart..is one word and using a "z" and mine is "Kids Art with MJ" and I think most ppl would see the difference. However after communicating with two Kidzart representatives with concerns and this being a small community I conceded and changed the name. Luckily I was able to reach the printer in time to cancel my order of business cards and other promotional items.

I will be posting the class schedule early this week for this upcoming Friday.Thank you
