After having this product brought up in conversation by a client, and then seeing it mentioned again in a poorly researched BuzzFeed article, I decided to do a little research into what’s floating around out there in the name of Piercing Care.
Unfamiliar with the alleged benefits of the listed ingredients as they pertain to body piercings, I reached out to longtime APP Member and Master Piercer, Michael Carter to find a better way to articulate to my clients and others why products like this are essentially snake-oil.
The following was his reply to my inquiry, and the photos below are from the product’s Amazon listing.
“So it has 6 different oils in it. All of which shouldn’t be recommended for piercing aftercare. This may help to reduce some of the symptoms caused from irritation, there’s plenty of people that say it does help. But nothing will cure the irritation or get rid of the bump until people figure out what’s actually causing it. Meaning if it’s an angle issue, that’s causing the bump, then the Piercing bump will likely never go away. If it’s a jewelry quality issue then the bump will go away for good once they put in better jewelry provided they’re doing everything else correctly. If the bump is caused because they keep touching it or something is coming into contact with it it shouldn’t be, then they would just continue to come back until they stop touching it or get rid of whatever keeps coming into contact with it. If it’s hair products you’re using that are causing a bump on their ear, this solution may help the bump but it will keep coming back if they keep using those hair products. At best this oil is a Band-Aid. Not an actual viable solution to get rid of Piercing bumps. And there’s no oil or beauty product that one can buy that will actually remove a real keloid that is false advertisement on their end. Real keloids typically require surgery to remove. So I’m pretty sure what they’re saying is even partially illegal. If this stuff was something, the industry believed in, we would all be using it. It would be recommended and talked about by all the leading industry professionals. But it’s not.”
Hopefully that sheds a little bit more light than me simply saying “Just don’t.”
