I had the best cat growing up. His name was Blueberry and he was really a dog in cat form. He went for hikes, jumped over streams, chased squirrels, and took over the bed at night. It was awesome! Even though I couldn’t have a dog growing up, at least I had Blueberry. After my husband, Bob, and I got married, getting a dog was our top priority (after moving into our home!) We rescued Sugar from a shelter in Cary, and it was love at first site. Again I had a companion who loved to go for long hikes in the woods, keep our backyard rodent free, and greet me whenever I came home.
A few years after we adopted Sugar, I graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh with a Fine Art & Illustration degree. Soon after, our first son was born, and two years later, our second son came into the world. As new parents, we were fortunate that Sugar was so gentle with the boys. At that time, the only art I created was out of construction paper and Play-Doh -- but I was happy. When our youngest went to Kindergarten, I went back to work in an administration role. I loved the people I worked with, but in my heart I wanted to use my art degree.
In early 2016, we sadly had to let go of Sugar after 12 years of love, laughter, and many hikes in the park. It was a very difficult time for our family. Later, we adopted Graham from a shelter in Wake Forest and he, like Sugar, brought much joy to our home. This time of letting go of a beloved friend and starting a journey with a new one made me realize the strong bond between pet and owner. I knew I wanted to merge my love of art and animals and create pet portraits. I named my business Sugar Grahams Art after two of my best friends. It brings me great joy to create drawings and cartoons of all pets. My hope is that I can create a happy and loving memory on paper for you.
