Dear Siblings in Spirit,

I finally got a nice recording of a song that was commissioned, composed and performed in 2023. It is high energy and inherently interfaith friendly.

The refrain is a Dominican "merengue" with some novel chord changes in the bridge and verses. The song was first sung at Koinonia Camp in upstate New York on June 10, 2023. It was enthusiastically received, but it was performed outdoors on a windy day so we didn't get a good recording. This video is of a performance on February 25, 2024 at Spirit of Peace Lutheran Church. Milwaukee, WI https://youtu.be/Mrwo8sQQOuk?si=gKG1irxb5_GdTe7b

The piano vocal score is available at www.WorldHouseMusic.org.

Enjoy!

Dear Siblings in Spirit,

Attached is the poster for Connect the Dots: An Intergenerational Multicultural Workshop and Performance. The event takes place in Chattanooga, TN on November 4 and 5 of this year. In the workshop I will teach Afro-Latin percussion techniques and rhythms which will be integrated into some of my choral works such as Connect the Dots and El Bautismo (Baptism). And there is dance, too!

This fun, inter-active, educational workshop is only $10, and the performance is free. I look forward to seeing some of you there in Chattanooga!

Dear Siblings in Spirit,

It has been quite some time since I've sent out an email, but I've not been idle. The Minister of Music of Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Stephen Stacks, invited me to be his sub during his three month sabbatical, and I am on the last third of this opportunity. My primary responsibility is to direct the choir of some 30 voices. It is an extremely well trained ensemble which has been a joy to direct.

The repertoire chosen is extremely diverse: contemporary, classical, Black and White Gospel, and a couple of my own compositions as well. In fact, tomorrow, 9/10/23, I get to direct my anthem, Fruit of the Spirit, one of my favorites from my collection of anthems, "All Are Welcome! Feel the Spirit! Eight World Music Choral Anthems for Youth, Adults and Congregation." This one is a fun, lively jazz waltz with an easy to remember melody. If you are in the neighborhood, come by Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, in Cary, NC, or check out the service on YouTube. Here is the link to the church website https://buff.ly/3EtOGpH You will also hear some progressive, challenging, prophetic preaching! You can also listen to this anthem and others from that collection on Spotify.

That's it for today. More updates to come soon. Thanks for your interest in my music.

This Sunday there will be an interfaith celebration in honor of MLK, Jr. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 600 Walnut, Cary, NC.
A choir will be singing my setting of "Do Justice, Love Kindness," and a lovely song, "MLK" written by well-known composer, Ray Makeever. If you are in the area and would like to sing in the choir, there will be a run through at 2 PM at Christ the King. Both songs are easy to learn. The music scores are available for free download at www.WorldHouseMusic.org.

Come and celebrate Dr. King's legacy with people of various faiths. There is more that unites us than divides us.

"Be Clothed in Love" is posted just in time for Valentine's Day, and for sure it is appropriate for the occasion, but the song's original purpose was to celebrate the agape of the first Lutheran-Moravian collaboration in the United States of America. In 2014, Pastor Dawn Volpe of Ephraim Moravian Church selected Colossians 3:14-15 as the watchword for Spirit of Peace Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, WI. I was Minister of Music of Spirit of Peace and my task was to set it to music. The Moravian motto is the basis for the second verse.

"Be Clothed In Love" has since then been sung in wedding ceremonies and numerous church services of many denominations. I am grateful to Jay Helms of Echo Media and Stories for his creative editing of the video in 2021. Please note that CC is available. The piano vocal score as well as a lead sheet for printing in a church bulletin are all available at https://buff.ly/3GGE3yt

People know me primarily for my work in church music. Well, there is another side of me - a lighter side. Here is a song about being a vegetarian - just in time for Thanksgiving! HA! I hope it puts a smile on your face. Peblejah!
