Throwback Thursday
Now that the 2026 World Series is about to start, we repeat a favorite Throwback Thursday on baseball history in the Mono Basin area. An article from the Bridgeport Chronicle Union of June 27, 1925 extolls the talents of the Mono Lake team.

“Well! Our baseball team cleaned up on the Bridgeport and Gardnerville teams last Sunday at Bridgeport. The score stood as follows: Mono Lake, 19; Bridgeport 7. In the other game, Mono Lake scored 25; Gardnerville, 14. Our boys are hard to beat. A Los Angeles baseball fan, who witnessed the game said that the Mono Lake team was the best amateur team he had met up with outside the cities.”

The late August “Augie” Hess, born in 1914, recalled a baseball team called, “the Mono Lake Indians” in his book, “The Kid From Mono Mills."

“They played against teams from Bodie, Bridgeport, Yerington, Smith Valley, and Schurz. This Mono Lake team was quite a team. Their main pitcher was Paiute Charlie, an uncle of mine, and another uncle, Henry Charlie, was on first base. Bridgeport was the big rival.”

Hess became pitcher and manager of the Lee Vining town baseball team from 1948-1953. Fall has come down upon the Stewart campus 🍂 Just like the changing seasons, we tell the story of the changes through time of this campus, which operated for 90 years.

Looking for a quick outing? You can find the walking trail around campus on the AllTrails app if you want to check it off your list! While taking the tour, you can listen to firsthand accounts of the school via our self-guided phone tour, or download the app to listen right on the trail or from the comfort of home.

The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum was proudly represented across northern Nevada this weekend.

From campus outreach to back-country field geology, our staff and dedicated volunteers were out in full force sharing our mission and community connection.

Museum Out & About: University Day

At the University of Nevada, Reno Day at the Museum event, staff member Kaitlynne Romero alongside volunteers Beverly and Renee shared the Stewart message, history, and resources with nearly 500 campus guests throughout the day.

Exploring Nevada's Deep Past: Earth Science Day

Further north, Museum Director Josh Bonde co-led an Earth Science Day field trip for the public in partnership with the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology . Over 80 eager registrants explored the unique prehistory and geology of the Lovelock area, climbing into Lovelock Cave and learning about the fascinating history of Ice Age Lake Lahontan.

We are incredibly proud of our team and so grateful to everyone who spent their weekend learning with us.
