Mark Your Calendars: Two Special Events Coming to Stewart This September!

We are thrilled to invite you to the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum next month for two unique programs celebrating native authors, history, and language preservation.

Here is what is coming up:
Friday, Sept. 11: Book Signing with Alumna Dale Bennett
Event: Stewart Alumna Dale Bennett will be on-site signing copies of her book, Together We Endured.
Gift Shop: A limited number of copies will be available for purchase. Grab yours before they sell out!

Thursday, Sept. 24: Story Reading with Jay Martin
Event: Join us as Jay Martin reads the story Tapu ma'ai Tapai.
Significance: This story was created in collaboration with the University of Utah as part of Shoshone language preservation efforts.
Location: Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum
Admission: There is no cost to visit the Museum, Gift Shop, or to take the self-guided campus walking tour.

Proud moment for our organization!

Our very own dedicated volunteer, Daryl Crawford, appeared on ARC Reno on Fox 11 this morning in honor of National Navajo Code Talker Day.

Daryl did an incredible job sharing the powerful legacy of his father’s service as a Navajo Code Talker during World War II. We are so grateful to Daryl for keeping this vital history alive and representing our community so beautifully on television.

Great job, Daryl! Thank you for your continued dedication both to our team and to honoring your family's incredible heritage.

Honoring history, resilience, and community this weekend.

Clear Creek has always served as the southern boundary of the Stewart campus. In the early years of the school, it held a deeper, heavier meaning. Parents would set up camp just across the south side of the creek, waiting and hoping for even a brief glimpse of their missing children.

Today, it is a solemn, quiet, and peaceful little stream. It winds its way down from the Carson Range, eventually joining the Carson River, carrying with it generations of tears washed from this landscape.

This Sunday, August 16, we are deeply honored to welcome the runners of the 2026 Remembrance Run. This vital event pays tribute to the strength, endurance, and spirit of the Indigenous Boarding School Era survivors.

Join us on campus for special weekend hours, community events, and to support local vendors:

Special Hours: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Where: Campus grounds
Come walk the grounds, reflect by the creek, support the runners, and engage with our community vendors. We look forward to welcoming you.

This Sunday, August 16th, the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum will be open to the public for special event hours from Noon until 4:00 PM!

These special Sunday hours are in coordination with the culmination and completion of the Remembrance Run 2026. Runners of the 50-mile Remembrance Run will be coming in from Yerington to pay their respects at the Stewart Cemetery.

While our normal hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Closed Saturdays and Sundays), the public is warmly welcome to come down for this special weekend occasion. Stop by to visit the Museum, check out the gift shop, or take a self-guided campus tour. See you this weekend! There is no cost to visit the Museum or observe the special events.

New Additions & History Spotlight:

The Tebe Nobe Craft Shop
We are thrilled to share a recent donation to our collection, along with a deep dive into a unique piece of Stewart Indian School history!
Check out the photos to see the beautiful pelican woodcarvings recently donated by Pat Beattie, alongside two historic photographs of the original Tebe Nobe Craft shop.

The Story of Tebe Nobe Craft
Inaugurated as an art class at the Stewart Indian School in 1939, the Tebe Nobe Craft program allowed students to blend incredible artistry with the natural beauty of the local landscape. Operating through Wai-Pai-Shone Inc. under the instruction of Fredrick Forbusch, the program was a cooperative ensuring all proceeds from the sale of these items went directly back to the student artisans.

Natural Materials of the Great Basin
Students sourced raw materials directly from the surrounding environment to create their masterpieces, including:
Mountain Mahogany: A dense local hardwood featuring striking natural color variations from white to black, often with beautifully marked or striated patterns.
Native Gemstones: Creations were frequently inlaid or accented with stunning regional stones like turquoise, agate, malachite, sardonyx, rhodonite, lapis, and wonder stones.

From jewelry and bowls to letter openers, cutlery, bookends, and lamp bases, the wood shop produced a wide array of functional art that showcased the immense talent of the students.

Dear Stewart Indian School Community, Alumni, and Partners,

We are thrilled to share an extraordinary milestone in our ongoing efforts to preserve the history and legacy of the Stewart Indian School. The National Park Service (NPS) National Historic Landmarks Program is currently preparing a nationwide context study and an official National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for our campus in Carson City, Nevada.

Achieving NHL status is a distinction reserved for historic places of exceptional value to the heritage of the United States. For Stewart, this designation honors the thousands of Indigenous children from over 200 tribes who passed through these stone buildings between 1890 and 1980. It ensures that their stories of hardship, survival, and cultural persistence remain an authoritative part of national history.

This achievement requires community support, and your voice is vital. The NPS has opened a public comment period, giving alumni, tribal leaders, descendants, and community allies a direct opportunity to advocate for this designation.

The public comment period closes on October 1, 2026. Please visit the NPS Planning, Environment & Public Comment website to submit your statement of support. Your words will become part of the official federal record.
