Head Technical Director / Carpenter / Scenic Designer

Center Theater Company is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Head Technical Director / Carpenter / Scenic Designer to oversee the technical and physical production elements of our growing organization.
*This is a leadership position for someone who is equally comfortable designing a set, managing a build schedule, troubleshooting a lighting issue, leading volunteers, and physically constructing scenery. The ideal candidate is collaborative, solutions-oriented, artistically strong, and able to maintain high production standards in a fast-paced theatrical environment.*

Position Overview:
The Head Technical Director will oversee all scenic and technical operations for Center Theater Company productions and facilities. This position combines artistic design, technical leadership, carpentry, facilities oversight, and production management.
The role reports directly to the Artistic Director/Producer and works closely with directors, designers, stage managers, teaching artists, and volunteers.
Primary Responsibilities

Technical Direction & Production Oversight:
Serve as Technical Director for all assigned productions
Create build schedules and oversee scenic construction from concept through strike
Manage technical budgets and materials purchasing
Supervise and coordinate overhire labor and volunteers
Oversee load-ins, strikes, and technical rehearsals
Ensure safe construction and technical practices throughout the organization
Coordinate technical needs across productions and conservatory programming

Scenic Design:
Design scenery for multiple productions throughout the season
Create renderings, drafting, paint elevations, and construction plans
Collaborate closely with directors and production teams to execute artistic visions
Design creatively within budgetary and spatial limitations
Develop solutions for immersive and nontraditional staging environments

Carpentry & Shop Leadership:
Build scenic elements including platforms, walls, stairs, trim, specialty units, and practicals
Maintain organization and functionality of scene shop and storage spaces
Oversee inventory of tools, lumber, hardware, paint, and scenic materials
Train and supervise volunteers and student workers in proper shop practices
Assist with scenic painting, installation, and theater maintenance projects

Facilities & Theater Operations:
Help oversee the general upkeep and functionality of the theater building
Troubleshoot technical and facility-related issues as they arise
Coordinate maintenance and improvements to performance and rehearsal spaces
Support front-of-house and production operations as needed during performances and events

Qualifications:
Significant experience in technical direction, scenic construction, and scenic design
Strong carpentry and construction skills
Ability to read and create technical drawings and build plans
Experience leading crews and managing production timelines
Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Comfortable in a fast-paced and evolving environment
Ability to lift 50+ pounds and safely perform physical labor

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with immersive or environmental theater
Knowledge of lighting, sound, and rigging systems
Familiarity with Vectorworks, SketchUp, AutoCAD, or similar software
Experience working in educational or community theater environments
Ability to mentor students and volunteers
Valid driver’s license

Schedule:
This is a full-time salaried position. Standard hours are generally Monday–Friday during daytime hours, though evenings and weekends are required during tech rehearsals, performances, and production periods.
The schedule fluctuates seasonally and requires flexibility.
