Hailing from Rio de Janeiro, vocalist Kenia has become one of the foremost exponents of Brazilian song in the United States. From her debut on the great trumpet player Claudio Roditi’s, “Red on Red,” to her upcoming 2020 Mooka Records release, she has epitomized the breezy elegance, refinement and groove of the best of modern Brazilian music. D of the Year, and was nominated for a Grammy for her release, "Simply Kenia." Along with eight critically acclaimed solo releases (and counting), Kenia has performed at national and international festivals from the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival to the Bonaire Heineken Jazz Festival in the ABC Islands. "Singing, swaying, Kenia is Brazil, scatting, lively, absolutely irresistible" (Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, 2019). Kenia is not only a consummate vocal talent but also a savvy producer with a passion for sharing Brazil's rich cultural heritage. Along with kickin’ concerts featuring Kenia and her band playing some hot Brazilian bossa nova, samba and choro, Kenia offers a selection of special shows addressing Brazilian and Latin American cultures through education, music, visual arts, and languages tailored for each show. In conjunction or as stand-alone offerings, Kenia also presents professional workshops on Afro-Brazilian rhythms for school children; Afro-Brazilian rhythms for adults; and master classes in Brazilian phrasing for jazz and vocal students and artists. In addition to numerous performances and awards, Kenia is proud to work for various humanitarian and community outreach projects, particularly with the Allies for Health and Wellbeing (formerly Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force), The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, The Children's Home and Mario Lemieux Family Center and in various educational workshops with students from elementary to collegiate age. A teacher gave a balloon to every student, who had to inflate it, write their name on it and throw it in the hallway. The teacher then mixed all the balloons. The students were then given 5 minutes to find their own balloon. Despite a hectic search, no one found their balloon.

At that point, the teacher told the students to take the first balloon that they found and hand it to the person whose name was written on it. Within 5 minutes, everyone had their own balloon.

The teacher said to the students: "These balloons are like happiness. We will never find it if everyone is looking for their own. But if we care about other people's happiness, we'll find ours too."
