We're remembering Joe Negri, who helped make this a place for jazz.

Our Studio made its debut in 2011 with a Gala Tribute to Joe. He nicknamed the new space Maggie's Speakeasy, after our Executive Director at the time, Maggie Forbes. In 2017 he returned to the Music Hall to perform his own Mass of Hope, a benefit for the restoration of this building.

Many in Pittsburgh knew him as Handyman Negri from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Those who followed the music knew him as one of the city's finest guitarists and a generous teacher who spent decades passing the craft to younger players.

The jazz he helped start here still fills the Studio today: our Thursday-evening Carnegie Carnegie Studio Jazz Series, and the Emerging Artist Series we present with the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, pairing rising talent with established Pittsburgh players. That is the legacy he leaves us.

We're grateful for the start he gave us. Our thoughts are with his family and the many musicians he shaped.

125 years! Thank you to everyone who joined us for our birthday party concert on May 1.

And to all those who asked, yes, May 1 is our official birthday. While our building construction started a few years prior, May 1, 1901 is the day our doors opened to the public, and we've been going ever since.

Some people have a birthday or a birthweek, but we're going to go ahead and have a whole birthyear, so if you missed the party, don't worry. We'll be finding ways to celebrate all year long.

Hope to see you at the Library & Music Hall soon 💖

Thanks to for the photos!
