Sometimes, making life easier for parents starts with something as simple as a better desk.
At Fairfield Area Library in Henrico County, Virginia, staff noticed a familiar struggle: parents trying to use a computer while balancing a baby on their knee or keeping a toddler occupied.
They might be applying for a job. Finishing an assignment. Creating a document. But bringing a little one along made even those everyday tasks harder.
So the library worked with Quinn Evans architects and TMC Furniture on a thoughtful solution: computer workstations with attached play areas.
Four were installed when the library opened at its new location in October 2019. The child-sized spaces include cushioned floors and activities, keeping babies and toddlers close while their caregivers use the computers.
The idea went viral in January 2022 after a visiting dad shared a photo. One mother told Good Morning America that her children spent about 20 minutes in a play area while she made a business card and worked on other tasks.
It isn't a substitute for child care. Parents are still there, still supervising. But it removes one small barrier to using a public space — and sends a powerful message: families belong here, too.
Would a setup like this make your local library easier to use?
