20A The Carmel Pine Cone August 5, 2016
Bohemians write, drink and throw beach parties in Cherry Center play
FAMOUS FOR creating a “Bohemia by-the-Sea,”
Carmel’s earliest residents come back to life when a staged
reading of a comedy, “Abalone,” is presented Saturday and
Sunday, Aug. 6-7, at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts.
Written by Bill Broder, and shining a spotlight on the colorful
and creative residents who lived here a century ago,
“Abalone” turns back the clock to the town’s formative years
— an appropriate theme, considering the celebration of
Carmel’s 100th birthday this fall. “About 22 years ago, I
directed a production of the play in Carmel, and when centennial
came along, it seemed like a logical thing to bring it
back,” producer Walt deFaria told The Pine Cone.
As the play’s name implies, the town’s first inhabitants
loved abalone, which was famously served at picnics on the
beach by well known locals like writer Mary Austin, poet
George Sterling and journalist Ambrose Bierce. “They partied
on the beach, and they wrote and drank a lot,” noted
deFaria, who compared the scene to San Francisco in the late
1960s.
Directed by Maryann Rousseau, the play stars Jeanne
McCulloch as Austin, Patrick McEvoy as Sterling and
Keith Decker as Bierce. In a curious twist, Decker played
the role of Sterling when deFaria directed the play 22 years
ago.
Showtimes are at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m.
Sunday. A reception will follow Sunday’s show. Tickets are
$15. The Cherry Center is located at Guadalupe and Fourth.
