🎺 DID YOU KNOW? — French Horn

The French horn has over 12 feet of tubing wrapped into its iconic circular shape!

Known for its warm, rich sound, the horn can blend seamlessly with the woodwinds or boldly shine above the entire orchestra. Despite its name, the instrument evolved from hunting horns used throughout Europe centuries ago. Valves weren't added until the 19th century, allowing horn players to perform the wide range of notes we hear in today's orchestral music. Putting your hand into the bell doesn't just muffle the sound. It is an advanced technique called ""hand stopping"" used to alter pitch, change the instrument's key, and create a distinct metallic timbre. Did you know Carmel's Former Mayer plays the french horn?!

Listen for its noble sound at our next performance!

Recently first-grade students at the Sycamore School enjoyed a visit with Carmel Symphony Orchestra musicians. Chris Zaloudek, violin II, Marty Meyer, assitant principal cello, and Karen Hutchins, viola, shared their love of music with the1st-grade students. The musicians bring smaller scale instruments to allow the children to place their fingers on the strings and get a better feel for what playing the instrument is like.

The Carmel Symphony Orchestra is committed to creating experiences with children to create a lifelong love for classical music. The many benefits to our health is well documented and while these students may not understand why they love this music, they connect with it.

We hope our efforts enhance their lives and encourage them to play or enjoy classical music througout their lives.

Allen Whitehill Clowes Foundation continues its legacy of support for the arts and humanities with a grant for Carmel Symphony Orchestra. Clowes was a civic leader, philanthropist, arts patron and business executive who began the foundation in 1990 to encourage beauty and the human spirit.

The CSO will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in the upcoming 2026-2027 season and is very thankful for this support.

The Carmel Symphony Orchestra had the pleasure of honoring two of our original members upon their retirement. Jan Brill and Ann Manship helped form the symphony in 1976 with the other initial members and have worked tirelessly to grow it into the professional organization we enjoy today. The CSO was instrumental in supporting the efforts of the City of Carmel, Indiana Government as its redevelopment efforts focused on the arts as an economic development tool.

Thank you for your years of service!
